it becomes clear that [Fukushima plant chief] Yoshida’s measures will not work. Hearing that, [Tepco president] Shimizu gives instructions to use the measures called for by Madarame [chairman of the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan].

Work proceeds according to Madarame’s instructions, but the valve does not open immediately and valuable time slips by.

In the end, the situation remains serious, as neither measure has worked.

At 4:57 p.m. [on March 14, 2011], Shimizu gives instructions to those at the Fukushima plant to carry on their response while keeping in mind the worst-case scenario. Those at Fukushima say such a scenario would unfold in about two hours if nothing is done.

At 7:27 p.m., more than two hours later, discussion among those at TEPCO headquarters is centered on the possibility that all of the fuel rods have become exposed.

At that time, Akio Komori, the managing executive director, who is at the off-site center in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, mentions evacuation.

“Please proceed with the consideration of evacuation standards, because unless a decision is made somewhere about whether workers should remain at the central operating room something terrible will happen,” he says.

While discussions are being held about evacuating workers from the plant, there is agreement that all of the fuel rods at the No. 2 reactor were exposed above water at 6:22 p.m.

"..Uploaded by journeymanpictures on Mar 22, 2011
February 2001 – In Russia, the toll of a terrible nuclear accident is only just emerging after years of official denial and cover-up.
The truth of what occurred at the Mayak nuclear weapons plant, at the foot of the Ural Mountains, is by any measure appalling. With radioactive pollution far in excess of Chernobyl, the countryside around Mayak, including the village of Muslyumova, has been poisoned. And the people who've been forced to stay there as guinea pigs for the Russian government are dying. But for a long time, they didn't know it. The accident and its staggering after-effects were kept hidden from the villagers – and from the rest of the world – until it was too late…"

When power companies abandon nuclear technology, the "Worst-case scenario” will no longer exist.

I disagree. The Power companies will walk away if there is no money.
The residents of planet earth will be left to clean up the mess. Show me where this has not been the case, please.

Nothing has worked. Three reactors remain too hot for humans to work on. Arnie is right. Eventually, they will throw some concrete over it and walk away.

I doubt they'll even through concrete over it. They'll shut down the cameras, declare the area a no-flight zone, and that'll be the end of it.

You can't imagine how many people I talk to who think because there's no MSM news, it's all taken care of.

Some here talk about frogs and boiling water in a pot. Hmm.

''Walking away'' means walking around on 1 polluted globe.

Sometimes I wish "old" headlines were labeled as such since I'm running out of underwear from reading things that sometimes cause a temporary sense of panic while reading on to the part with reference to the actual date of the events described?!! I thought I was gonna have to re-wrap my testes in tin foil again(another layer, that is!!LOL)~Bottom line is that "walking away" can NOT be the option they end up choosing for all of us!!-It doesn't matter what the cost or how broke the damn planet's corporate parasites have made things at this most inconvenient time period in the history of mankind-EVERYBODY could pitch in and fund the research & hard, tedious work needed to tackle Fuku and nuclear "neutralization" techniques that should've been priority #1 from the get-go!! What did somebody decide that they should let the shit fly and the small percentage of humans and animals who display the ridiculous-sounding theory of "radiation hormesis" are the stronger who "deserve" to live while everyone else already sickened by nuclear crap & other industrial pollutants, thus "weak" genetically and deserving of the effects & eventual "death sentence" imposed by TPTB-who "aren't worth the person they're printed on" themselves??!! NO amount of money or manpower should be spared on the shutdown of all nuke facilities and remediation efforts undertaken!! Evidently "multi-tasking" isn't a TEPCO strong suit and they fall into the category of those who cant walk & chew…
