Workers at Japan Nuke Plant ‘Lost the Race’ to Save Reactor, Expert Says, Fox News, March 29, 2011:
Workers at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant appeared to have “lost the race” to save one of the reactors, a U.S. expert told the Guardian.
Richard Lahey, who was head of safety research for boiling water reactors at General Electric when the company installed the units at the Japan plant, says the radioactive core in the Unit 2 reactor appears to have melted through the bottom of its containment vessel and on a concrete floor.
“The indications we have, from the reactor to radiation readings and the materials they are seeing, suggest that the core has melted through the bottom of the pressure vessel in unit two, and at least some of it is down on the floor of the drywell,” Lahey told the paper. …

‘Radiation is good for you,’ says Ann Coulter as she weighs in on Japan’s nuclear crisis

Conservative maverick Ann Coulter has poured scorn on growing fears over the fallout from Japan’s nuclear crisis by claiming that ‘radiation is good for you.’
With her bizarre outburst, Coulter became the latest celebrity to cause a stir over controversial remarks on the disaster in Japan.
The right wing commentator was attempting to quell concern that a radiation plume was due to hit America’s West Coast today after travelling 5,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from the damaged reactor at Fukishima.

while she’s at it, she can bring back some for tony hayward, ken feinberg, and “dick” cheney…for starters…

Apparently the problem is not so much the risk of melt-down, which has been avoided.
The problem is hyper huge quantities of highly contaminated water which are gradually creating an internal flood within units 1 2 3.
Because the reactors are breached in a way or another that water migrates into the neighboring turbine buildings, possibly inside or around the pipes that are supposed to cool down the reactors.
There is already 1 m high, amounting to 10000 m3 of highly contaminated water.
Apparently that water was not expected there and is responsible for two burned workers the other day.
Part of that water has been relieved into trenches which apparently are nearly in the open air. The trenches are nearly full at this time. Unit1 is only 10 cm away from overspill. Unit2 and 3 only 1m.
So in my opinion as every unit seems to be “bleeding” radioactive water all about the place in the underground of buildings, it’s a matter of hours(?) before all that water overflows and gets into the sea.
And the second piece of bad news is that it may last for a indefinite time as the more it lasts the worse it becomes to repair those damn leaks and cooling systems as everything will gradually become inhumanly radioactive around that place.
It’s also possible that underground leaks into the sea may already exist from the turbine buildings through the cooling system pipes which normally work with seawater. As everything seems to be damaged in a way or another that’s possible.
That’s not far from becoming a slow-motion nightmare worse than Chernobyl as regards impact and pollution.
If they stop cooling it will melt down, if they cool it then leaking water will carry radioactive fuel into the sea.
Chrystal clear. I can’t see how they can avoid that in the short term.

I am sure that would actually make matters 7 fold worse.

Hey Afu,
If you can provide some links to some documents, that would be nice. You spent the last few days berating xdrfox and others
who are way ahead of you on the story.
That is great that you feel you should explain to all us kids your
grade-school level of understanding.
WE were telling YOU all about it, but now you have your “opinion”
that all the units are leaking! Wow, boy! what a scholar!
WE ALL saw MOX fuel rods blown sky-high and plopped down on
the sides of the building OUTSIDE, on the GROUND.
So, whoever the hell you’re working for, let’s see some
CITATIONS, some EVIDENCE, some DOCUMENTATION like even
one source that equals what others have posted, like me.
I was the first one to mention the Chernobyl Book produced by
the Russians.

….And NO, Afu, NO! “…The risk of meltdown, which has been avoided…”
WRONG! You haven’t avoided ANYTHING! Melt-down is the
order of the day!
Report Comment
True, and the fact that Chernobyl could still blow ! It is far from over there !

Jack
Do you think that was a hydrogen explosion or part of the core ?
In the Chernobyl that blew night explosion was said to have only blew 05% of the fuel in the core.
Makes one wonder IF what we saw was as Chernobyl ? The town near heard the explosion and no big deal ?
The clip, Documentary that was posted very familiar scenes and what happened after with the heat and steam, smoke still offing !

Also Will give anyone an idea what the task will be to cover all of these reactors in Japan.

@xdrfox: Thanks for the link about Ann Coulter. She obviously advocates this “radiation-is-good-for-you” BS that makes my skin crawls! Yurk!!!
@Jack: Looking for links? Just watch NHK World, all the facts Afu has reported are right out on your TV! I guess Afu and I are just watching exactly the same news at the same time when they are broadcasted (channel 680?).

Xdrfox is not ahead of me on that disaster. He’s psychotizing off the mark.
The real danger now is *not* air-borne weakly radioactive fall-out but the sea-borne heavily radioactive “drift-out” that has apparently begun to leak into the Pacific.
Apparently sea currents will push the “drift-out” across the Pacific eastward toward Hawai. I have no idea how toxic that will remain. I suspect that it will be much less diluted than air-borne fall-out as initial concentration is much higher and will dilute into much fewer m3 of water than is the case in air-borne fall-out. In addition this radioactivity is heavy stuff not volatile elements.
My understanding is here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/50857688/FUKUSHIMA-DAIICHI
All the crap about Mox is just propaganda from the American and Japanese nuclear Lobbies trying to push the blame on the fuel (made by the French) when the problems are poor design (US) and criminal neglect of maintenance (Japan).
My next prediction is that they will build a huge containement building asap in order to pump the liquid leaks into that new containement instead of releasing it into the sea. I have no idea how long it will need to get that system operational. In the meantime a lot of highly radioactive water carrying heavy stuff like uranium will keep on leaking into the Pacific.
I suspect the Japanese requested the help of Areva and five specialists on water containements to achieve that. It makes sense.
I wonder who is going to make the first simulations of sea-borne “drift-out”.
Air-borne simulations are now irrelevant.
All the best.

I posted this a few days ago, A death blow to Japan’s fishing industry
John M Glionna and Kenji Hall
The Los Angeles Times
First Published : 24 Mar 2011
Standing on the deck of his 91-foot trawler, veteran fisherman Tomoyuki Kondou winces over reports that radioactivity from Japan’s damaged nuclear power plant in nearby Fukushima has contaminated the local food supply after this month’s deadly earthquake and tsunami. The bespectacled third-generation angler has heard the warnings that milk, spinach and other vegetables grown around the plant have been found to contain traces of the radioactive isotopes iodine-131 and cesium-137.
Now Kondou and others in Kesennuma worry that radiation from the seaside nuclear plant might also affect the region’s long-bustling fishing industry, which provides tuna, oysters, shark, squid and seaweed to restaurants and supermarkets throughout Japan and around the world.
Japanese officials this week said they have detected higher than normal radiation levels in samples of seawater….

Apparently 40% of the core was blown out of the reactor at Chernobyl.
Not 5%. figure is 40%.

It depends on the many articles on it, but your Kremlin KG source may have it right !

40% ? , I don’t think the reactor would have still been there at all let alone the whole plant and the other reactors !

Look at any picture of the building after the reactor exploded.
There is no reactor any more, no roof, no wall. Just a huge black hole.
Wikipedia has 25%. Never mind.

NHK World is still producing minimalist, just what we HAVE to release, under-information if not outright DISinformation.
Afu, and Conrad,
lets jump up a notch on this communication:
1.) Japan is Dead as a viable Nation…a big liability.
They already had a big Debt problem, and now WHO is going to
INVEST anything into this Sinister, Satanic Nuclear Rathole?
2.) The USA is Dead as a viable Nation.
We once again have to indulge in military murder upon an Arabic
Nation, spewing propaganda every which way about how we are
protecting the poor victim peasants from a cruel dictator.
3.) We, you know “WE” is? The so-called USA, I mean?
WE exist as debt-slave, wage-slave suckers relying upon the
Foreign Power of the so-called Federal Reserve, which actually
is revealed to be Goldman, Sachs, which actually is revealed
to be the so-called Nation of Israel. They control everything.
Our Military is commanded by so-called Israel.
Israel controlled “Security” at the TEPCO Fukushima plants,
and at ALL nuke plants.
Who gives a Rats Ass about any Americans? Not Israel.

**thanks much** to all of you guys for thinking and analyzing what pathetically minimal scientific info. there is to go on with this. I can’t even believe that Obama is out giving generalist speeches at Georgetown today with no concern or ACTION whatsoever on the nuclear crisis! I see more media whitewashing and platitudes, as with the ongoing destruction of the Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic Ocean…

yep, “cap” from reactor 3 blown sky high from mox criticality AFTER meltdown to “drywell” containment. Note hole in roof of turbine hall east of reactor 3 exact size of “cap.” Also, original vid of #3 explosion we hear 3 explosions within the single visible event. Meaning action triggered from INSIDE the “3″ layers of physical “containment”…anyway…denouncing evidence because of….ad hominem…”where’s your proof of authority”…and others rampant on news/troll side
