Two-thirds of hot nuclear fuel remains in reactor core at Calhoun plant even though media claims it was ‘shut down’ for refueling and maintenance

Rising water, falling journalism, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists by Dawn Stover, June 16, 2011:

Virtually every article about the flooding mentions that the Fort Calhoun plant was shut down on April 9. On May 27, the Omaha World-Herald reported, “The Omaha Public Power District said its nuclear plant at Fort Calhoun, which is shut down for maintenance, is safe from flooding.” The implication is that being shut down makes a plant safe. But as the ongoing crisis in Fukushima demonstrates, nuclear fuel remains hot long after a reactor is shut down. When Fort Calhoun is shut down for maintenance and refueling, only one-third of the fuel in the reactor core is removed.

Thats what I like about enenews. All good news, all the time. If I wasn’t such a cynic and iconoclast I could get depressed. Now I just smile and shake my head, oh, and sip some hibiscus tea.

      Hallucinatory Effects

Some people have experienced an hallucinogenic effect from drinking hibiscus tea or a sensation of feeling intoxicated. Take care when driving or using machinery if you are unfamiliar with the side effects of this tea.

      Note

      Cancer

There are some early indications that hibiscus has an effect on cancerous cells in the brain and skin, based on research on medicinal plants from the Americas for the treatment of cancer and AIDS performed at the New York Botanical Garden, in coordination with the National Cancer Institute. Although this is good news, those taking anti-cancer drugs, undergoing radiation or chemotherapy should avoid the tea, due to possible interactions between it and their medications.

My neighbor is an educated, 30 year old, working mom. I was going to casually talk to her today about Calhoun, and I introduced the topic by first mentioning Fukushima and what’s going on there.

    She said, “What?”

I said, “Fukushima. You know, the nuclear plant in Japan.”

She said, “Oh yeah, I heard something about that.”

I changed the subject. Good grief.

They’ll be pounding on the door “water! water! water!” We can’t live without water or reduce our intake too much and be healthy. Humans CAN, on the hand, actually live on very small amounts of food (not that I have that much, just saying, we can lol)and actually live a lot longer, once after the age of 30, if they eat very little. It’s the children who have the double wammy of being vulnerable to contaminated water and contaminated food, the infants, the developing fetuses, have it the worst, 100′s of times worse with internalized/ingested low-level radiation.

xdrfox you’re very right. I lived for 36 years in Middle America. I currently live somewhere where it’s a bit better than that. Reality is very irritating to U.S. citizens, apparently. I’ve heard ALL the excuses for it; and mostly and ultimately, the excuses for reality avoidance, apathy, inaction, lack of revolution against the knuckle-heads running the status quo, are all cop-outs.

Oppenheimer thought all his pretty explosions could be a doom of humanity. He would have been shocked to realize it was the purification process that was the true threat.

Well, the situation is better than Fukushima, since the fuel in the reactor has had over two months to cool. It’s still hot enough to melt, but not in the extremely short time that Fukushima Daiichi did.

There is still potential for disaster, though. It’s that ol’ spent fuel pool blues…

What is important to remember is just what the term “shut down” means in the mind of a nuclear psychotic.

Shut down in their world means shove all the control rods in to drop the fission efficiency to a very low level compared to full on energy production. There is not and never has been an “off” state for these systems.

Same as the Federal Reserve having anything to do with the US federal govt.
Sounds like it does, and that is how they plan on people to interpret the phrase.

Same as the view site advertised in an MLS listing where “the view” in reality is a crack in the tree limbs only in winter that lets you see the mountain in the distance if you know where to look.

Same as the green colored paper in our wallets with pictures of dead presidents that they infer is “money”.

Same as diet food labeled “lite” or “low fat”.

Same as milk fat % measured by weight vs total calories.

I offer this for the non-scientific amongst us who are trying to get up to speed on all of this.

How Twilight Zone it is that my Friday evening cultural experience is here on enenews with all of you as we do this self induced Clockwork Orange reality immersion.
