Dr. Helen Caldicott in Japan

Dr. Helen Caldicott, Physician: [The health survey of children in Fukushima Prefecture] found 40% have thyroid abnormalities, which is incredibly rare in pediatrics.
Some of these children almost certainly are bound to develop cancer of the thyroid. And indeed one 12 year old boy has already been diagnosed with it. And a girl aged about 16 may have already developed cancer. They are testing her now.
It took 5 years for the children around Chernobyl to develop cancer. These children are showing symptoms and signs that they may well develop cancer in the future, indicating that they got a really high dose of radiation, higher than at Chernobyl. [...]
I predict we’ll see an epidemic of leukemia and cancer and congenital malformations in this exposed population over the next 70 years or longer. [...]

America will start seeing thyroid abnormalities within five years ?
Report Comment
Criminal that any government east, or west would allow this to happen to its children. What is particularly tragic, is that these governments could have, and should have, prevented this from happening!
Informed parents, would have made the correct choices to keep their children safe, and healthy.
Report Comment
Officials responsible for this outrage should be held accountable, and imprisoned!
Report Comment
A responsible leadership would have acted decisively, and not allowed this to happen.
Report Comment
Gosh I totally agree with you! Unfortunately, the nuclear industry is making us all their bitches.
Report Comment
WE already do show thyroid abnormalities..check out Hanford WA. Check out the "downwinders". Now just add Fukushima radiation. No wonder the EPA took down Radiation Monitors in the Western USA. Parents should get a baseline ultrasound for children in states with fallout from Fukushima…

Dr. Caldicott for world president.

Or at least Senior Advisor….

here-here! I'll second that! And Arnie Gunderson has to be up there somewhere too!
Report Comment
Definitely!
Report Comment
The US government is no better than the Japanese government. The US is the first to congratulate Japan on a cold shut down but without containment. The US stops releasing fallout data from monitors, fails to test seafood, doesn't test food for radiation imported from Japan, applies no pressure on Japan to better manage the Fukushima nuclear disaster site, the US continues extending operating licenses for the same type of old reactors that melted down in Fukushima…how stupid can you be.
Report Comment
The US sold this sheesh to Japan, now the US pushes nuclear as a form of "security" really right now…
What a joke, a farce, a criminal offense.

Lots of activity on unit 4 – looks like they may be pulling fuel rods

Workers running away from unit 3 orange glowing on 2 sides looks like a fire mabey
Report Comment
Where are you seeing that? All i see is 2 cranes and 1/2 of a building. (bottom half)
Report Comment
look at the orange glows just right of the right crane bottom on either side of the multiple rod stacks – tell me what you see
Report Comment
on tepco camera
Report Comment
Ohh, yeah. I thought that was two workers in orange suits … I just started watching today
Report Comment
You may be right. I was watching the movement, and it does look like random movements of orange.
Report Comment
may be optical illusion but the orange glow keeps going up and down and then away and back again
Report Comment
be nice if there was a camera on that side
Report Comment
Looks like it's getting bigger, and several workers were running in that direction
Report Comment
Please post the link for the rest of us who have not previously been watching. Thank you.

They just took the lid off spf 4 and its glowing orange also???????
Report Comment
That has got to be fire
Report Comment
No smoke though and if it was fire those workers would be getting a lethal dose of rads – gotta be an optical illusipn – I hope!!
Report Comment
Or maybe red hot metal?
Report Comment
It's hard to distinguish with the pixelation of the video feed
Report Comment
sure looks like a fire though
Report Comment
mabey thats why they took the lid off the spent fuel pool
Report Comment
think i barely see a faint water stream from a fire hose on the right side of the flames over unit 4 or mabey white smoke puffs??
Report Comment
clouds went over and looks like its reflections of sunlight now – whew!! Hope so.
Report Comment
there goes another fukuquake
Report Comment
I think they extinguished the one on the left. The one on the right, if it's fire .. is still going.
Report Comment
wow, unbelievable.
Report Comment
Don't think they were fires after all – a cloud went over them and they disappeared – I believe they are sun reflections now
Report Comment
Then there is a cloud that's been over the one for like 5 minutes
Report Comment
hard to tell at this point

I refuse to analyze or comment on low resolution video.

As I've mentioned on the web-cam thread a few times, there was a real close-up of one of the orange things on the TEPCO site, where the image caption called it radiation shield. Unfortunately I can't fin that specific picture right now. It's clear that's what they are, as they're frequently being lifted and moved by the cranes.
My main reservation is I have no idea how so they're supposed to be "radiation shields". They really look little more than a piece of cubicle separator wall with orange post-it notes covering the surface. Radiation is stopped by dense material, there's only a few things that are used for radiation shielding, lead usually. Tungsten or depleted uranium would work well, but they're expensive, and none of them really look like bright orange post-it notes or cloth flaps. So it's very unclear to me how they're supposed to work unless they're just for feel-good show.
Report Comment
Enformable is using the "radiation shield" image for their Fukushima news coverage, for some reason google image search doesn't find a match for it nor could I find the original on TEPCO site (might have been inside some huge PDF) anymore last I checked. The flaps are lot longer than I recalled, but still look clothy:
http://enformable.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Radiation-shelter-and-shielding-wall.png
The web-cam white-balance and the agressive compression they use for the video feeds do strange things to colors, so it's not necessarily glowing. Either way it's unclear how it's supposed to work.

Thanks for clearing that up guezilla.

I don't understand our energy logic. We focus on how "dirty" coal is, our most abundant natural resource fuel. How much more dirty is a fully operational coal-powered power plant than a leaking Nuclear one? There simply is no comparison. But we have been led to believe that this is for the best. I'd rather die of black lung disease than Leukemia…I'll take a little global warming over a millenia of poisoned air, soil, water, food. We now have a future of innumerable horrible birth defects and skyrocketing cancer rates. We have been hoodwinked by General Electric and the EPA…all in the name of "cleaner" energy sources. People contend that Clean Coal Technology is a myth. Even if it is…NOTHING IS DIRTIER THAN NUCLEAR…NOTHING.
