It may not be that hard to track RADIATION caused thyroid damage, as a new test identifies (like a DNA test) if damage is caused by radiation…..so for TEPCO or the Japanese government, the cause of thyroid disease due to radiation maybe difficult to hide. Wonder if that testing will become available to the victims????

2 weeks ago I was talking about Fukushima with a temp co-worker covering someone on vacation. I was talking about how the radiation has peppered America and come Autumn (now) there will be an increased awareness in cancers, retard, and deformations of new borns, and already since the meltdowns, melt outs, china syndrome, there has been an increase in infant mortality. I felt like a Jehovah witness pushing it on him, to understand the consequences. He showed me a picture of his brother in Seattle Washington of his brother with Thyroid Cancer. He is young was diagnosed in May. I felt bad pushing the subject, and alarmed.

I visited family in NY last week. Mother had a silent heart attack so I went up there to visit her. I was staying at my sisters, and her grandson had flu like symptoms. She took him to the Dr. and he said everyone is having the same symptoms. I looked at the most recent fallout maps and was reluctant to show my sister, but I did. She was silent.

On another health note,….I have a friend in Taos, NM, he said yesterday that he’s had the stomach flu for about 5 days. When I again mentioned FUKU,…he said, “No, this is the flu,…the entire town of Taos has it, it’s not radiation”. What can you do with that?

This page is an excellent resource and has established itself as centrally relevant to the Fukushima disaster. Maybe it is time to consider an activist arm that reaches beyond simply an aggregate of the news and current events related to the disaster?
Busby has begun an effort to get children out of Fukushima. I posted the video here and Admin ran it in the headlines stream that explained the details.
We should consider expanding the sites capacity to support such efforts as Busby’s. Clearly there are some groups already doing this but I see no reason why we here cannot muster up the effort to not only inform those interested but begin to help out those in need.
Its intolerable to watch the suffering of children and feel so helpless. There is a great potential here in my opinion to overcome the overwhelming sense of helplessness and build a strong supportive community for those affected.

if they have tested 130 children nationaly ….
there are 200,000 in the fukushima province (the hardest hit apparently) then 13 percent are efffected…that gives an estimated figure of 26,000 children effected in the fukushima province…and that is only iodine131 exposure…what about the cesium etc??
Report Comment
My sense of it is that the numbers are all bullshit.
Busby clearly illustrates the myriad of long term risks people are exposed to and the difficulty involved in ever gaining a real understanding of the extent of it all. It is most alarming with the children, however adults are also at great risk.
You are right that they work to identify Iodine related issues as Iodine is truly the least of the worries. Its like treating a kid for a mosquito bike who just got hit by a bus. Sure he had a mosquito bite too but the the fact is they just could not deal with the horror of the extent of the damages from the bus and would rather obsess with the misquito inflicted injury because we understand it and its much less horfifying.

Yes I agree with what you are saying, I was simply underscoring how they manage the issues surrounding exposure. By focusing all the coverage on Iodine, whose half life is among the weakest of the bunch they are able to skirt the many, many other issues related to exposure your subsequent posts allude to.

iodine 131 causes a whole range of thyroid problems not only cancer!
“In addition to thyroid cancer, there is another thyroid related problem due to Chernobyl’s radiation release. According to the medical journal, Lancet, children exposed to radioactive iodine due to the Chernobyl nuclear explosion may be more likely to develop hypothyroidism. Research conducted at the University of Pisa showed that exposure to Chernobyl’s radiation caused the children to have more antithyroid antibodies than other children. These antibodies may cause the children to later develop hypothyroidism.”

Excerpts follow from the transcript of a talk (included in full below) given by Dr. Rosalie Bertell speaking in Oslo, Norway in 1990 on the effects of exposure to ionizing (penetrating) man-made radiation.
“We are also talking about physical damage to the brain, inablility to think as clearly and as well as previous generations. With aboveground weapon testing there was a decrease in general intelligence quotient as measured by standardized tests. They are starting to admit it now even in official publications. In a recent publication from the US Academy of Science it is admitted that exposure of the fetus to radiation between the eighth and the fifteenth week lowers mental ability, causes mental retardation. “
And this
“If you change one cell, and it is still able to produce, it makes two cells with damaged chromosomes which can cause exponential growth of cells that are not going to do the right thing. An example of an illness that results from this is adult diabetes where the person has sufficient insulin, but it doesn’t work to bring down the blood sugar. It is mutated.
Another example is allergy. You may get allergy as an adult–then you have stopped producing antibodies. Over time we build up things like inability to digest food, we don’t recover as quickly after illness, we get hormone problems and so on. All this comes from this kind of changes and mistakes in the chromosome material. “
And this
“But already in the fifties medical radiologists started looking at their own first causes of death and discovered that not only were they dying at a higher rate from cancer, but that they also were dying at an higher rate from everything else: cardiovascular, renal disease and other chronic illnesses. I am trying to show you the breadth of what radiation does. We receive so much propaganda saying that if you are exposed to radiation you have a chance of getting cancer, and if you don’t get cancer you don’t get anything. But to repeat: there is a hundred per cent probability of cellular damage when you are exposed to radiation. The body can repair some, but there is always residual damage. Whether or not you care about it depends on how severe it is and what you take as a starting point. Right now they are counting only fatal cancer. You are told that low doses of radiation can’t be measured”

This is really sad Arc,…I’ve told of my sisters and I getting nose bleeds in 1963,…two of the three of us girls had severely handicapped children our first time out the gate. My precious Ashley, died in 2006, was trisomy 21, downs syndrome. The other sister’s only child had severe CP, and retardation.
The specialist at UC Davis, said that her form of retardation was not typical. He said he and his colleagues think it is environmental in origin.

It is important to catch elevated TSH levels in children early. Insufficient thyroid hormone in children will prevent the brain from developing properly and can stunt a child’s growth according to the article, “Hypothyroidism in Infants and Children” by Mary Shomon.
Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/108622-elevated-tsh-children/#ixzz1ZtD1dnPV
So Fukishima children (13%) will have potential of poor brain development –can you say lower IQ?–and stunted growth from elevated TSH.

Monitoring stations catch a fraction of Fukushima fallout
“They’re measuring only a fraction of the radioactive fallout from Fukushima,” said Gordon Edwards of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, speaking from Montreal
And this
The highest level of iodine-131 recorded in the country was in Resolute Bay, Nunavut, where the concentration reached 9.76 millibecquerels per cubic metre. (or nearly 1,000 times higher than the background level).
Also in Sidney, the level of radioactive cesium-137, which has a half-life of 30 years, shot up about 40-fold, from a background level at or below 0.01 millibecquerels per cubic metre to a high of 0.4 millibecquerels per cubic metre on March 25.
Those levels were individually well below the maximum ceilings permitted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, which for iodine-131 is 200 millibecquerels per cubic metre of exposure in the air on a daily basis for an entire year.
But when all of the radioactive material that was detected is combined together—along with unknown exposure from many other radioactive substances not being monitored by Health Canada, like strontium-90 (which has a half-life of 29 years) and plutonium-239 (with half-life of 24,000 years)—the radiation still poses a health risk as it concentrates and becomes more potent in the food chain, said Gordon Edwards of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility.
“There is no safe level of radiation. What may be acceptable for individual exposure may not be acceptable when millions of people are exposed. It’s important to measure the cumulative impact of all the isotopes, but only a small fraction are being measured,” Edwards said.”
