    “…Simply put, the Bayou Corne Salt Dome Collapse, the Plumes from several dormant volcanic areas, the Earthquakes along the edge of the plate at fracking / injection/ drilling sites, the mystery booms / rumbles toward the center of the plate……. all can be explained by excessive pressure on the craton.. moving the whole plate in one MASSIVE event — taking place currently — taking months to complete the process…..”

    Landry flew over the Louisiana sinkhole this week and stated that he could see diesel and other chemicals floating on top of the sludge inside. Some of the massive cyprus trees that fell in are floating on top of the hole because of the salty water’s bouyancy.

    "When you construct and operate a salt solution mining cavern, you inject diesel to serve as a blanket. It protects the upper portion of the leaching cavern from degradation in the area where the casing extends from the ceiling of the cavern. When the cavern is no longer used, it remains filled with brine for stability and the diesel blanket continues to float at the top of the cavern."

    Mururoa Atomic Bomb test site in danger of collapsing

    "..Mr Oldham said if the atoll were to collapse, radioactive material would be released into the Pacific Ocean, and could cause a 15-metre tsunami. “Just in that little area, there is over maybe 12 underground tests in that area, and we have to remember that France have done
    altogether 193 nuclear test explosions in Mururoa,” he told Pacific Beat.

    “In the soil of Mururoa, if something happens there are about 150 holes containing very dangerous radioactivity.”
    MET, an organization working to secure restitution for victims of
    French nuclear testing in Tahiti, has been trying to raise the issue
    with the French government and public, Mr Oldham said…. the leaked
    report, Mr Oldham says, makes no mention of radioactivity.
    “In this report we got not too long ago, they’re not even talking
    about radioactivity,” he told Pacific Beat. “The way they present it,
    it’s like it’s not very dangerous.”…"

    Info on HLW and Salt Domes…

    Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has conducted performance analyses for disposal of HLW in deep boreholes basement rock (Brady et al. 2009) and in a mined geologic repository in clay/shale (Hansen et al. 2010) and has a long history of performance-assessment analyses for disposal of non-heat-generating waste in salt. This report contributes to the national discussion regarding geologic disposal by synthesizing technical information regarding salt disposal of HLW. It agrees with a well-known study by the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council in the 1950s (National Academy of Sciences Committee on Waste Disposal 1957) that states,

    "The most promising method of disposal of high level waste at the present time seems to be in salt deposits. The great advantage here is that no water can pass through the salt. Fractures are self-sealing…"

    In 1986, the DOE selected three candidate sites for HLW disposal, each in different geologic media: basalt at the Hanford Reservation, Washington; volcanic tuff at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; and bedded salt at Deaf Smith County, Texas (DOE 1986). In 1987, Yucca Mountain was specified2 as the sole site for the potential development of a HLW repository. Over the next 21 years, the U.S. continued site investigations, conducted performance assessment (PA), supported modeling activities, and started design for a repository at Yucca Mountain.

    1.2 Salt Formations in the United States
    Use of salt formations for nuclear waste disposal has been a widely embraced concept for more than 50 years. Disposal of nuclear waste in salt remains a viable concept in the U.S., as has been successfully demonstrated by virtue of more than ten years of successful operations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico. As shown in Figure 1 and Table 1, the conterminous U.S. has many salt formations, including bedded and domal salt. For repository considerations and other uses, such as petroleum storage, salt formations are often categorized as “bedded” or “domal.” Bedded formations of salt (sodium chloride) are found in layers interspersed with materials such as anhydrite, shale, dolomite, and other salts such as potassium chloride. These formations are tabular and can range across enormous land areas (see Figure 1). Bedded salt formations are often between 200 to 600 meters thick, but in some cases they can have thicknesses of up to 1,000 meters in the U.S. Domal formations (i.e., salt domes) form from salt beds when the density of the salt is less than that of surrounding sediment. Under such conditions, the salt has a tendency to move slowly upward toward the surface. As the buoyant salt moves upward, it deforms plastically into mushroom-shaped diapirs and many other cylindrical and anticlinal shapes. The top of some domal salt can be near surface, while the root may extend to a great depth.

    @jebus good reports. Scary, reading the Sandia labs one–NO mention of the word "danger"..and all discussion on the topic..was based on 3-D modeling, not REAL data. A model is only as good as the design and data driving it-its NOT real world unless modeled after real world objects. Since Sandia could only use theory..thats what they are talking about. Not one comment on what happens when there is a failure..and there WILL be! Darn it, and I am a scientist. Now on to the next document..Brief History.pdf.

  • 'Nuclear Detonations' in a SALT DOME

    "Two nuclear detonations performed in a subterranean SALT DOME formation, as part of a 1960's Atomic Energy Commission Test. The first detonation, to form the cavity, code-named Salmon, took place in 1964 using a 5.3 kiloton bomb, placed at the bottom of a sealed 2,710-foot shaft. The second nuclear blast, a relatively small 0.38 kilotons yield shot code-named Sterling, was exploded within Salmon's 110-foot diameter cavity more than two years later." (31.334871°N, 89.450684°W)

    From 1945 until 2008, there have been over 2,000 nuclear tests conducted worldwide.

      So before January 2011-Texas Brine acknowledged a BREACH OUT OF THE SALT DOME. Then on 6-2011, 6 months later, a Plug and Abandon (P&A) was completed. Wonder who signed off on THAT! Sounds more like RUN for the hills before the house of cards collapses! If a "breach out" what is the procedure for P&A? Was it followed? Or IS there a procedure? I am betting there is no procedure or process to follow. Anyone know how other "breach outs" of this magnitude have been handled in the past? Remember, Texas Brine, in the report/letter, acknowledged a "magnitude" of pressure loss which was significant–would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when the engineers reported THAT to HQ! Just curious.

    ***GONZALES — Officials at a Houston-based brine company said Friday it will be at least 40 days before they get definitive answers about an enormous sinkhole that opened up in Assumption Parish.

    Mark Cartwright, president of United Brine Services, a subsidiary of Texas Brine Co., said the company spent the last week "intensely focused" on an emergency response as they try to figure out the cause behind a sinkhole near Bayou Corne.***

      ***Four people in Assumption Parish have filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Brine, saying the sinkhole and resulting contamination caused damage to plaintiffs who are in need of medical monitoring. The lawsuit also says the public was never warned of any dangers that might be a result of drilling in the salt dome.

      All four plaintiffs were forced to evacuate their homes as a result of the sinkhole. The lawsuit says the sinkhole and resulting contamination violated the Clean Water Act and the sinkhole was caused by "willful misconduct and/or willful negligence."

      Nick Romero, another resident of Bayou Corne, said he's sick of the misinformation he's being fed from the company and his state officials.***

    Its telling when CHEVRON declares force majeure –they are not legally responsible due to "natural" disaster,AKA the Salt Dome issues and seismic events– for CHEVRON natgas storage sites around the area until Dec 31 2012! Customers have been told to draw down natgas reserves by 40%. This was TUESDAY–a day or so before the news of the sinkhole and salt dome issue was publicized. Glad they are keeping in touch with the dangers- were the PEOPLE evacuated before or AFTER this announcement?

    As to the NORM, naturally occuring radioactive material, Texas Brine had permission for 20 cubic feet of NORM –thats all. So why the worry about "radiation" if this was low level "natural", etc etc? Did more materials get injected than allowed? Or are more salt dome repositories with greater NORM amounts affected?
