TV: EPA data reveals “sharp spike in radiation level” around US nuclear site — “It’s been reportedly leaking huge amounts of radioactive materials for more than 2 weeks” — Evacuations enacted… Almost 50 workers have sought medical attention… Symptoms include bleeding ulcers, burned lungs (VIDEOS)

Published: May 7th, 2016 at 2:40 pm ET

KING 5 News, May 5, 2016 (emphasis added): Record number of Hanford workers sickened by toxic vapors — An unprecedented number of workers at Hanford have been exposed to dangerous chemical vapors since Thursday, April 28. In one week’s time a total of 47 people either sought medical attention… Symptoms reported by workers include a headache, burning nose and throat, nausea, a metallic taste in the mouth, elevated blood pressure, and dizziness… [T]hose familiar with the nuclear site cannot remember so many people falling victim in such a short period… On May 4, two more evacuations were enacted at the site after workers smelled odors and experienced symptoms… “Forty-two employees have been evaluated as a precautionary measure due to reported odors or symptoms at the on-site medical facility since Thursday. Thirty-one employees reported health symptoms while 11 went for cautionary reasons. All have been released to return to work” said Rob Roxburgh of the Dept. of Energy, in a statement sent to KING 5 on Wednesday. Chemical vapor releases at Hanford come from underground nuclear waste storage tanks that vent the gasses without warning.

RT, May 7, 2016: Spike in radiation levels after toxic waste leak at Washington nuclear siteRadiation levels at the Hanford, Washington nuclear waste site have spiked to “elevated risk” after thousands of gallons of toxic waste leaked in April… The recent readings from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) obtained by RT have revealed that a sharp spike in the radiation level had been registered in Richland on the morning of May 5. The readings show the random jump when the toxic fume rates briefly reached around 410 CPM (counts per minute), nearly the highest possible level… As of Friday afternoon, there have been no media reports suggesting that an evacuation or other measures and guidance have been ordered for Richland… The most recent radiation spike comes less than a month after a massive leak was first detected…

RT transcript, May 5, 2016: On Thursday last week at least 19 workers at the Hanford nuclear site were hospitalized after inhaling poisonous fumes, from tasting metal in their mouth to bleeding ulcers and burned lungs.

RT transcript, May 3, 2016: At the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state… more workers sought medical attention after inhaling radioactive fumes. This adds to 19 workers hospitalized last week for the same reason — reinforcing burning concerns about the facility as it’s been reportedly leaking huge amounts of radioactive materials for more than 2 weeks… [Tom Carpenter, Executive Director of Hanford Challenge:] “It’s an environmental disaster, at some point the [Columbia] River becomes so contaminated that you can’t use the river.”… Ecologists say the situation can always get worse. They hate to think what would happen in case of even a minor earthquake in a geologically unstable area that it is. But even in the current state of things with tanks leaking nuclear poison into the environment, Hanford is already way past the ticking time bomb stage.

RT transcript, May 2, 2016: [Tom Carpenter, Executive Director of Hanford Challenge:] “A second double-shelled nuclear waste tank is showing signs of having failed, you find that out because there’s high radiation levels in between the two shells of the tank. There should be no radiation in that space… but instruments they have deployed there show high radiation levels, plutonium, cesium, strontium-90, etc. – well where did that come from? It probably came from the tank, meaning there’s a hole.”… So we’re looking at potentially a catastrophe, a disastrous catastrophe? [Carpenter:] “Every day we’re looking at that at Hanford – I’m totally serious.”

RT transcript, Apr 21, 2016: ‘Washington state nuke plant leaks thousands of gallons of toxic waste‘… Experts say it’s time for every American to be worried.

Nuclear concerns in Armenia via The Jerusalem Post

At a press conference on April 29 in Armenia, MP Hrant Bagratyan, a former prime minister, claimed that Armenia has nuclear weapons.

… We did know that Armenia has a nuclear power plant at Metsamor, which was built in 1970, ceased operations in 1988 and then resumed work in 1995. Mehmet Fatih Oztarsu, vice president of the Turkish Analytical Center for Strategic Outlook, in an interview with Trend News Agency said that according to ecologists, seismic activity in this area makes operations at Metsamor nuclear power plant extremely dangerous …

Netanyahu rebukes Israeli general over Holocaust speech

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, contradicting his defense minister, scolded Israel's deputy military chief on Sunday for suggesting that Israeli society was showing signs of Nazi-like behavior.

The rare public rebuke of a serving general was the latest example of Netanyahu taking action that appeared to put him at odds with top brass in a national debate on moral conduct in the conflict with the Palestinians.

In a speech on Wednesday on the eve of Israel's Holocaust remembrance day, Major-General Yair Golan evoked a dark time in the history of the Jewish people in calling on Israelis to engage in soul-searching.

"If there's something that frightens me about Holocaust remembrance it's the recognition of the nauseating processes that occurred in Europe in general, and particularly in Germany, back then – 70, 80 and 90 years ago – and finding signs of them here among us today in 2016," he said.

Golan's comments were widely interpreted as comparing behavior of some in Israel with that of the Nazis, who killed six million Jews in the Holocaust of World War Two. …

Former fishermen sue state for hiding Bikini atoll H-bomb fallout records
    MAY 9, 2016

KOCHI – A group of former fishermen Monday filed an unprecedented lawsuit seeking compensation from the government for failing to disclose, for decades, records of their exposure to radiation from U.S. hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific Ocean in 1954.

A total of 45 people, mostly from Kochi Prefecture and including families of deceased fishermen, are seeking ¥2 million each, according to the lawsuit filed at the Kochi District Court.

It is the first time a compensation lawsuit has been filed against the state in connection with the hydrogen bomb tests conducted on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The tests began with an explosion code-named Castle Bravo on March 1, 1954, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said.

Castle Bravo was the largest nuclear weapons test ever conducted by the United States and spewed radioactive fallout over a vast area. The tuna trawler Fukuryu Maru No. 5, also known as the Lucky Dragon, was in the fallout zone, and one of its 23-man crew died about six months later.

The plaintiffs are crew members from other ships that were also in the vicinity around the time of the H-bomb tests. They include 10 people who applied in February for workers’ compensation for cancer and other diseases …

    • rogerthat

they say were caused by the radioactive fallout.

“Among my peers, there are people who died in their 40s. I feel angry about how the state responded,” Yutaka Kuwano, an 83-year-old plaintiff, told a gathering earlier in the day in Kochi.

Details on the amount of radiation likely received by members of other ships remained largely unknown because the government did not disclose records of the radiation checks that were conducted on ships in the area.

However, retracting its earlier position that no such records exist, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry released them in September 2014 after repeated requests from a Kochi-based civic group and others studying the issue.

The health ministry acknowledged that members of 10 ships, among some 500 vessels in the vicinity of the tests, were exposed but asserted the doses did “not reach levels that could damage their health.”

The former crew members plan to argue that the state intentionally hid the records. As a result, they were deprived of the chance to exercise their right to seek damages from the United States and suffered emotional distress.

They will also point out that the government failed to conduct follow-up health studies on the crews of ships other than the Fukuryu Maru and failed to offer compensation after Japan and the United States reached a political settlement in January 1955.

The United States paid $2 million to compensate for injuries and damages caused the 1954 nuclear tests without …

        without admitting liability.

The payment was also agreed to represent “full settlement” of any claims against the United States over the issue.

Jeeezus,PJ, your are trying to BS the wrong guy. I was in my first year of college when they killed JFK. I spent the next 20 years or more researching his death. While living in New Orleans,1968,I became friends with a guy that testified before the Warren Commission. He and Oswald were buddies in the Marines when they were stationed in Japan. Also, had friends who were friends of Jim Garrison. These people shared a lot of knowledge with me…..Bottom line PJ you are a troll….For those who don't know, Oswald renounced his citizenship when he went to Russia and said he would turn over any info about his military experience the Russians requested. When he wanted to come back to the States with his Russian wife our Embassy provide him with money and a ticket for both he and his wife. He was never charged with spying when he got home because was working for the CIA.

Why do you keep advertising fusion energy? Fusion energy is nuclear energy. In case you don't know space is filled with dangersous cosmic rays from the sun that will kill you quickly. Fusion energy needs lead containers to keep the radiation in, but it always leaks out.

You are spamming for fusion energy, not me. You are just another snake oil salesman.

      Why isn't your research published?

Who cares if you knew somebody who knew Oswald in the Marines. That isn't research. Oswald wasn't honorably discharged from the marines. He didn't graduate from high school. He was a failure who beat his wife, not a CIA spy.

OK guys this is way way off topic but unable to remain silent on the death of JFK – my aunt was in the square and she distinctly heard 8 shots, also several weeks after the death of our beloved president I stood in the window where Os was reported to have fired the super crummy rifle, and there is no way he could have shot President K because there was a large tree between the window and the marked off path of the motorcade – the tree became so well known to the public, as it made it so blatantly obvious to the curious crowds going to the site to see for themselves the awful place, that the assassin could not have seen passengers in a motorcade, or shot through the limbs of the tree – tbtb then settled upon an easy fix – they removed the tree, problem gone – move along now there is nothing to see here

“…Reclaiming History: Bugliosi rejected the allegations that Oswald was “a rather poor shot” and a “joke” as a marksman. As had the commission, he relied on the scores attained by Oswald during his military service and emphasized, relying on testimony from one of the men who served with Oswald, that Oswald’s highest score of 212, which qualified him as a sharpshooter, was the more important score because it would be used throughout his career as proof of his capability. Bugliosi also relied on the testimony of the three expert riflemen described in the commission report. He added, however, the results of an experiment conducted by CBS and shown on a program in June 1967. The CBS investigators used an identical model of Oswald’s Mannlicher-Carcano and a tower and target track constructed to match exactly the heights, distances, and angles in Dealey Plaza. The target was a standard FBI silhouette and moved by electric motors at eleven miles per hour, approximately the speed of the presidential limousine on November 22. After practicing with the rifle at a nearby range, eleven “volunteer marksmen” took turns firing three shots at the moving target. Their average time to fire the three shots was 5.6 seconds. Bugliosi concluded that “the evidence is very clear that Oswald, with his background with a rifle, had plenty of time to accurately fire two of the three shots in the 8.4 seconds available to him and at the intervals suggested by the various studies of the

… …"There are dozens of workers who have suffered serious, even life-threatening health effects due to exposure to these toxic vapors, but Hanford has so far failed to prevent ongoing exposures. This work is a necessary first step to bring academic discipline to chronicling the experience of these workers," said Liz Mattson, Director of Education and Outreach at Hanford Challenge, who is my client and partner for the project. Hanford Challenge is a local advocacy group who, along with local unions and the state of Washington, is working to protect Hanford workers.

Since the summer of 2015, I've been conducting in-person interviews with workers to generate text for qualitative analysis. Time and distance have been my biggest challenges, since I am conducting my interviews in-person in the Tri-Cities Area of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, which is over 200 miles away. The fieldwork grant I received from the Northwest Public Health Training Center has helped with travel costs, and I don't know how I would have been able to do this important work without such assistance. I have had an enormous amount of support from my faculty advising team of Amy Hagopian, PhD (Health Services, Global Health); Steven Gilbert, PhD, DABT (Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences); and Holly Barker, PhD (Anthropology).

In the next few months, I will be finalizing my report, which presents my analyzed qualitative data from the Hanford worker interviews and from conversations with providers who treat these workers, as well as recommendations for improving the complicated systems that workers must navigate to receive care and compensation. This research will be submitted to a peer-reviewed public health journal in the summer of 2016. In addition to my UW capstone presentation, scheduled for June 8, 2016, we hope to plan a public event that will include a facilitated discussion with an audience and panel members, following a presentation of my work.

Back in Bob's house, as we wrapped up our interview and I was preparing to leave, he said something that sums up the reason this work is so important to me: "Something needs to be done…or they're gonna keep hurtin' people." The urgency Bob and the other workers have expressed continues to encourage me to complete this work, while feeling grateful to be part of a graduate program that supports problem-based learning and public health practice.

Reprocessing spent fuel to separate plutonium from the highly radioactive barrier in spent fuel rods, as is being proposed as a ‘waste solution’ under the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership program, increases the risk that the plutonium can be diverted or stolen for the production of nuclear weapons or radioactive ‘dirty’ bombs. Reprocessing is also the most polluting part of the nuclear fuel cycle. The reprocessing facility in France, La Hague, is the world’s largest anthropogenic source of radioactivity and its releases have been found in the Arctic Circle….”

“The majority of high-level radioactive waste is the fuel from the hot core of commercial nuclear power plants. This irradiated fuel is the most intensely radioactive material on the planet, and unshielded exposure gives lethal radiation doses. It accounts for 95% of the radioactivity generated in the last 50 years from all sources, including nuclear weapons production. Uranium is processed into fuel rods and loaded into nuclear power reactors where it undergoes the nuclear fission reaction. This increases the radioactivity due to the formation of intensely radioactive elements known as fission products, such as cesium and strontium, resulting from the physical splitting of uranium-235 atoms. Heavier elements, known as transuranics, are also formed — including plutonium. Each 1000 megawatt nuclear power reactor annually produces about 500 pounds of plutonium, and about 30 metric tons of high-level waste in the form of irradiated fuel. After several years, when removed from the reactor core, the fuel is about one million times more radioactive than when it was loaded. This irradiated fuel is currently stored at the reactor sites….”

@ HoTaters. – Good points; this Hanford situation DOES need to be investigated further. (DOn't egt me wrong, I DO agree on thát)

The Te-132 detection in Germany on April 26, 2016 is a bit of a head-scratscher, though, as I don't think it's technically possible for Hanford nuclear waste to go re-critical at a massive scale to cause that. But we may be having more than one events happening at the same time here (for (Jan.-Feb.?-) March-April-into-May-2016)."

Personally, I tended to look to Europe as the origin of the spike he showed on his graph. That is why I drew attention to the article re pollution from Europe, however in so doing I noted in my comment, that they did not specify that it was radioactive.

          • Angela_R

One could ponder on the following:

On 28th April, it was announced that: “Belgium is considering handing out iodine tablets to citizens in the event of a nuclear emergency. The pills are used to lessen the impact of radiation on the thyroid gland, and can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer after exposure.”

There was conjecture in a number of newspaper articles that the reason for the distribution of these tablets was because of terrorist threats.

However, in the link above it is stated that “The measure was recommended by the Superior Health Council as part of a revision of the country’s rules on dealing with a nuclear accident. The Health Ministry said it will take the suggestion into account as it draws up new rules to be finalized before the end of the year.

After looking at the effects of the 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan, the health council said iodine tablets should be distributed to those within 100 kilometers of an affected nuclear plant, Belgian Health Ministry spokeswoman Els Cleemput told POLITICO.”

The purpose of the distribution of the iodine tablets was stated to be in the event of a 'Nuclear Accident', it did not mention a 'Terrorist Attack'.

Although I'm sure everyone knows, I hadn't seen it mentioned in any of the posts (unless, of course, I'm blind as a bat and inattentive, both of which are possible), but the nation's newest national landmark is:

Hanford’s historic B Reactor officially became part of the national park system Tuesday morning as an agreement was signed creating the new Manhattan Project National Historical Park.

The new park, number 409 for the nation, also will include the few buildings that remain at Hanford which once belonged to the settlers along the Columbia River. They were forced to give up their homes, farms and businesses to make way for the secret World War II project to produce plutonium for an atomic bomb.

    Read more here:

I usually make it a point to see all the national parks in the western United States. I think I'll pass on this one.

Is Hanford A Bigger Threat Than Fukushima? Progressive Roundtable

    Published on May 3, 2016

Alex Lawson, Social Security Works & Sarah Badawi, Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) join Thom. With Special Panel Guest – Kevin Kamps, Beyond Nuclear. Radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster is still crossing the Pacific – contaminating air and water along the way. But there's a much bigger nuclear threat that's been sitting on America's west coast for nearly 70 years. We’ll be talking about the nuclear threat in America's Pacific Northwest.

    • unincredulous unincredulous

Let's get out a ruler and measure these cock-ups.

    • ISeePinkClouds

      Yes. HillbillyHoundDog. Ty.

Thom: "What is the event that Beyond Nuclear is putting on Tomorrow?"

Kevin: "It's a Chernobyl commemoration plus thirty years. We will commemorate Fukushima plus five years. The Chernobyl anniversary just passed on April 26th. We have world class scientists who are going to speak in Washington at the Goethe Institute tomorrow night."

"We've got Dr. Timothy Mousseau, a biologist that has done scores of studies of wildlife at Chernobyl, and at Fukushima. Weve got Vladimir Wertelecki, a Pediatric Oncologist, who has found horrific results in the human population near Chernobyl, and we have Yuri Hurinuma, from Scientists for Social Responsibility, who is now seeing, you know, terrible impacts on the population around Fukushima, especially children."

Experts present startling findings around Fukushima and Chernobyl at commemorative event

Beyond Nuclear held a stimulating afternoon and evening of presentations, panel discussions and short films to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the 5th anniversary of the still on-going Fukushima nuclear catastrophe. The event took place on May 3rd at the Goethe-Institut in Washington DC and was also supported by the Heinrich Böll Foundation North America.

      Pretty cool, eh?

“The laws of physics and chemistry are not negotiable,” said Michel Jarraud.

"For the past decade or so the oceans have been sucking up this extra heat, meaning that surface temperatures have only increased slowly"..

“Don’t expect this state of affairs to continue though, the extra heat will eventually come out and bite us, so expect strong warming over the coming decades"..

    Collapse of Industrial Civilization
Finding the Truth behind the American Hologram

Russia recently answered the concerns of environmentalists over Gazprom’s drilling plans in the Arctic by summarily arresting numerous members of Greenpeace and charging them with piracy. This is a high-profile case illustrating that ecocide is embedded and enforced within the system of capitalist industrial civilization. A further example of the system’s omnicidal nature is the construction of nuclear-powered ice-breaker ships by Russia to plow through the waters of the Arctic:

    Disrupting the temporal rainfall patterns

"When we say that the storms are shrinking in space and shrinking in time, and we say floods will increase, we are making an assumption that the volume of water coming down is not changing,” said Sharma. “That assumption is very conservative, because you would expect the air to hold more moisture. If you factor in that in as well, there’ll be even more rainfall, and more floods.”

"As warming proceeds, storms are shrinking in space and in time,” said Wasko, lead author of the paper. “They are becoming more concentrated over a smaller area, and the rainfall is coming down more plentifully and with more intensity over a shorter period of time. When the storm shrinks to that extent, you have a huge amount of rain coming down over a smaller area.”

From the review: "Half-Life in Fukushima doesn’t address the science of the radiation or the risks Naoto is taking by returning, which would be interesting, but unnecessary to this particular story. What they’re trying to do is demonstrate that the town isn’t gone. It isn’t dying, it didn’t explode into oblivion; it’s resting, returning to a more natural state."

The lethality of the radioactive contamination will increase the next 250,000 years and kill everything in sight. This is NOT "returning to a more natural natural state." Man's inhumanity to man is really horrible.

How many lies have we been told by the government, its agencies, main stream media, and paid dis-information trolls. Who do we believe? Do we believe them when they tell us all their readings on UV radiation show everything is fine? Even when we can feel with our own skin and senses the sun is too hot?

Do the “liars” lie about other things as well? What about nuclear fallout? Even after Fukushima blows and continues to spew radiation to this day, and is still getting worse? Do we believe government agencies, dis-information people and all their phony statements and impressive graphs of totally fictitious data telling us everything is “normal”? How about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, lots of charts, graphs, and phony data there, more than anyone could even begin to digest. “Data” saying everything is “safe” from too many sources to list, yet marine life and people continue to die in the gulf day in and day out in spite of everything being “fine”. What about the Exxon Valdez? How about the lead that used to be put in gasoline? That was fine till it wasn’t. DDT, that was completely safe we were told. “Agent Orange”? Vaccines? Cell Phones? Smart Meters? Safe, safe, safe, no need to worry. The cancers and diseases being caused “are not related” many dis-information people and agencies say.

How about geoengineering? Is it really going on? Well, “it can’t be because the government says it isn’t so”. They would never lie to us, would they? Even NASA says the chemical covered skies from global geoengineering are “safe and normal”. They have even set up special courses to teach our kids such despicable lies.

If UV radiation had gone “off the charts”, what might it do to our aquatic friends? Lets start with global plankton populations, the foundation for life on earth. Even NASA says high UV radiation would be really bad for these microscopic organisms.

      • ISeePinkClouds

        Yes. GOM. Ty.

"The combination of a midday sun near the zenith, as well as the high elevation of these sites, produces higher irradiance levels because of naturally low ozone in such locations. But these intensities of short-wavelength UV-B radiation (280 – 315 nm) are unprecedented."

"In addition, a large solar flare occurred just two weeks before the highest UV fluxes were registered. Ultraviolet spikes continued to occur – albeit at lower intensity – throughout the period of solar instability, and stopped thereafter."

“A UV index of 11 is considered extreme, and has reached up to 26 in nearby locations in recent years,” notes Cabrol. “But on December 29, 2003, we measured an index of 43. If you’re at a beach in the U.S., you might experience an index of 8 or 9 during the summer, intense enough to warrant protection. You simply do not want to be outside when the index reaches 30 or 40.”

The UV is intense in the Chihuahuan Desert today. It is 89*, clear skies, light breeze out of the S.E., low humidity, and it is dangerous to be outside.

The weather channel gives a UV Index of 10 for my location.

I think they are mistaken. (sarc)

71 years later, ‘downwinders’ are still ignored

By Dr. Maureen Merritt / Former Santa Fe Resident
    Monday, May 9th, 2016

… The nuclear bomb survivors living in and around the Tularosa basin feel much the same way the Japanese survivors do.

We know, because we have talked with Japanese survivors and journalists ourselves. We know, because compared to the rest of the United States, the higher morbidity and mortality statistics in many counties surrounding the Trinity site bear out the facts of 71 years of toxic exposure affecting generations.

If the Los Alamos historical group wishes to discover the facts for themselves, I would welcomes them to begin their real research right here at home, where they will find the locals’ stories to be eerily similar to the Japanese stories.

The one main difference is when Trinity was detonated at ground zero, it didn’t kill people outright as did Fat Man and Little Boy. But the lingering death and destruction aftereffects are all very much the same. Seventy-one years later.

New Mexico’s “downwinders” have been written out of the history books, including Los Alamos National Laboratory’s museums and carefully crafted stories of the Manhattan Project.

As a physician advocate and active member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, I am angry because a grievous wrong has yet to be righted. …

Geoengineering, Runaway Climate Disintegration, And Programmed Societal Apathy
    May 4, 2016

The forests are dying, the oceans are dying, the Earth is dying, and even at this late hour the vast majority of first world societies remain completely immersed in total denial and apathy that is manifested in many forms. The ever growing list of extreme weather events and unfolding global die-offs are not discussed or disclosed by the power structure owned and controlled corporate media machine of mass distraction. Though climate engineering is aggressively denied by the criminal media cabals, it is real, ongoing, and lethal to all life.

"The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses"..Malcolm X

Last year, Dr. Graham Turner updated his CSIRO research at the University of Melbourne, concluding that:

“… the general onset of collapse first appears at about 2015 when per capita industrial output begins a sharp decline. Given this imminent timing, a further issue this paper raises is whether the current economic difficulties of the global financial crisis are potentially related to mechanisms of breakdown in the Limits to Growth BAU [business-as-usual] scenario.”

Stone tsunami markers now cultural assets in Rikuzen-Takata
    By KAZUMASA SUGIMURA/ Staff Writer
    May 8, 2016

RIKUZEN-TAKATA, Iwate Prefecture–Nineteen stone tsunami markers erected around a century ago to warn against building in low-lying coastal areas now have protected status.

The city’s Board of Education designated the markers, designed to teach residents lessons from past towering tsunami disasters, as cultural assets for the first time.

The markers dot the city’s coastal area, which has always been vulnerable to tsunami.

According to the education board, nine of the markers were erected after the 1896 Meiji Sanriku Tsunami. The remaining 10 were set up after the 1933 Showa Sanriku Tsunami. The city’s official history book shows that the 1896 tsunami claimed the lives of 817 people, while the 1933 tsunami killed 106 residents.

The education board started a fact-finding survey of the tsunami-warning stone monuments after the magnitude-9.0 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. All the markers found to be still standing in the city were designated as cultural assets, except for those washed away by tsunami triggered by the earthquake. They include 15 markers in the Hirota-cho district, three in Otomo-cho and one in Kesen-cho.

Inscriptions engraved on all the stone monuments from the Meiji Era (1868-1912) are dedicated to mourn the tsunami victims. Using an old term for tsunami at the time, “kaisho,”…

    • rogerthat

they feature words such as “monument in memory of souls lost to drowning” and “soul-beckoning monument.”

Meanwhile, most of the stone markers from the early Showa Era (1926-1989) teach lessons learned from the tsunami disaster.

The inscription on a 1934 stone monument standing along a prefectural road on the east side of the Hirota Elementary School reads: “Tsunami will come after a major earthquake. Get together at high ground. When you hear tsunami, throw away your greed and run. Don’t build houses in low-lying areas.”

But the lessons inscribed on the stone monument have weathered with the passing of the years. By the time the 2011 earthquake hit the region, many houses had been built below the stone marker and suffered considerable extensive damage in the tsunami that followed.

“We hope that children who will be born in the future and other members of a generation who have no recollection of tsunami would also make use (of the cultural assets) as learning tools for disaster prevention education,” said an official of the education board.

At least one of the stone monuments designated as the cultural assets was established with donations collected by Tokyo Asahi Shimbun, the predecessor of The Asahi Shimbun, from its readers.

Israel brings fresh charges against nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu

Former nuclear technician who revealed details of Israel’s nuclear programme is accused of breaching restraining orders

Israeli prosecutors charged nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu on Sunday with violating the terms of his release, more than a decade after he completed an 18-year jail term.

Upon his release in 2004, Vanunu was slapped with a series of restraining orders, some of which he has violated in recent years, the justice ministry said.

According to the charge sheet, Vanunu in 2013 met two US nationals in Jerusalem without having permission to do so.

He is also accused of moving to a different flat in his apartment building in 2014 and failing to inform police.

And in 2015, he granted an interview to Channel 2 television, in which he relayed to the interviewer “classified information that was cut out by censors”, according to the indictment served at Jerusalem magistrates court.

The former nuclear technician was jailed in 1986 for disclosing the inner workings of Israel’s Dimona nuclear plant to Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper.

He spent more than 10 years of his sentence in solitary confinement.

In the 2015 interview, Vanunu said he no longer had any secrets to spill and just wanted to join his new bride in Norway, theology professor Kristin Joachimsen …

    Nuclear Technology:
The Inappropriate Exercise of Human Intelligence
    — and Given This, What Is Appropriate?

It is not a normal situation when the people who are in charge
of the fate of a whole civilization lie quite openly to the whole world.
    –Dr. Vladimir Chernousenko,
Physicist and Scientific Director of the Chernobyl "clean-up", 1986-91,
testifying at the World Uranium Hearings in Salzburg, September, 1992.

This fact — that from the beginning it was understood that nuclear technology provided a new form of biological weapon "fatal to living beings" disbursed via the radioactive matter generated in the reaction — coupled with the fact that the nuclear fuel "cycle" continues to generate more and more lethal hi-level and low-level radioactive fission products, has created an absolutely untenable situation for the ongoing survival of life on Earth.

Bigger guns, bigger problems? How high-powered ammunition could affect nuclear power plants
    May 9, 2016

  • Angela_R

Re Hanford: “The weapons production reactors were decommissioned at the end of the Cold War, and decades of manufacturing left behind 53 million US gallons (200,000 m3) of high-level radioactive waste.

In 2007, the Hanford site represented two-thirds of the nation's high-level radioactive waste by volume. Hanford is currently the most contaminated nuclear site in the United States and is the focus of the nation's largest environmental cleanup.”
How does that compare to Fukushima…

Yes, they did shut down weapons production at Hanford, but when does the danger of fissile reactions pass…

    In a million years?

  • HillbillyHoundDog HillbillyHoundDog

…CH2M also exceeded last year’s treatment record of 1.9 billion gallons. To date, Hanford contractors have treated more than 13 billion gallons of groundwater and removed more than 200
tons of contaminants, including nitrate, carbon tetrachloride, hexavalent chromium, uranium, and technetium-99.
Six pump-and-treat systems treat groundwater at Hanford by pumping groundwater up through wells and treating it to remove contaminants, before the water is re-injected into the ground.
“We continue to find innovative ways to increase treatment capacity,” said Wiemelt. “As a whole, our systems are operating at about 113 percent of their designed capacity and, with several upgrades we’ll finish this year, that number will be even higher.”
The groundwater contamination resulted from operations to produce plutonium from the 1940s through the end of the 1980s. Since 2009, CH2M has more than quadrupled the groundwater treatment capacity at the Hanford Site, from 500 million gallons a year to 2.1 billion gallons a year.

              Yes. CodeShutdown. Ty. Beautiful.

One step into the light, one step away from night
It's the hardest step you're gonna take
The ship to take you there, is waiting at the head
Of the stairs that lead up through your opened mind

Above the dark despair, shines a light that we can share
Close your eyes and look up in between your brows
Then slowly breathing in, feel the life force streaming in. Hold it there, then send it back to him

All the old things are returning
              Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our savior, savior, savior, save your soul

The river of living breath, is flowing through the sun
He was there before the earth began
The world will drag on you, use his love to pull you through
Find the mission of your life and start to be

All the old things are returning
              Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our savior, savior, savior, save your soul

There's one thing I can do, play my Mellotron for you
Try to blow away your city blues
Your dreams are not unfound, get your feet back on the ground
The truth will set us free, we cannot lose, we cannot lose
We cannot lose, we just have to choose, we cannot lose

"Find the mission of your life, and you will start to be."

              Your mission…

              • ISeePinkClouds

Yes. If my mission were to not speak, could I do it? If my mission were to give up learning, could I do it? If my mission were to meditate, could I do it. If my mission were to listen, could I do it? If my mission were to be honest, could I do it?

mission:(n.) 1590s, "a sending abroad," originally of Jesuits, from Latin missionem (nominative missio) "act of sending, a despatching; a release, a setting at liberty; discharge from service, dismissal," noun of action from past participle stem of mittere "to send," oldest form probably *smittere, of unknown origin.

Diplomatic sense of "body of persons sent to a foreign land on commercial or political business"

If I could change the word mission, into, "it is your duty to yourself", then, I think I could do that.

"One step into the light, one step away from night
It's the hardest step you're gonna take"

It is my quiet time now.

Thank you to those who linked to this 'anthem'. I had never 'consciously' heard it, however, without the peyotes, had experienced its message. Neither did I learn the Eastern Way of Meditation; yet somehow, I had unconsciously moved within it. How precious to have it here – expressed in words.

Pinter reaches to the cosmos and the quiet Energy of Love flows back.

For me, what jumps out in these verses is 'we just have to choose'.
If nothing else, we have that; for even an imprisoned soul has the ability to wish, I call that – free will.

"It is my quiet time now." Yes, I too desire to re-enter that world; shortly I hope to.

      Don't You Feel Small

      • Jebus Jebus

For those that didn't understand then or can't make out the message…

Ask the mirror on the wall
Who's the biggest fool of all,
        Bet you feel small,
        It happens to us all.
        See the world
        Ask what's it for,
        Understanding, nothing more,
        Don't you feel small,
        It happens to us all.
Time is now to spread your voice,
Time's to come there'll be no choice,
        Why do you feel small,
        It happens to us all.
        Look at progress,
        Then count the cost,
        We'll spoil the seas
        With the rivers we've lost.
See the writing on the wall,
        Hear the mirror's warning call.
        That's why you feel small,
        It happens to us all.
Ask the mirror on the wall
Who's the biggest fool of all,
        Bet you feel small,
        It happens to us all.

        Seems kinda prophetic now…

6th nuclear reactor scrapped under stricter safety rules

    →National May. 10, 2016 – 04:25PM JST ( 17 )

Shikoku Electric Power Co on Tuesday ended operation of a nearly 40-year old nuclear reactor in western Japan, making it the sixth unit to be scrapped under stricter safety regulations introduced after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

The utility decided in March to decommission the idled No. 1 reactor at its Ikata nuclear complex in Ehime Prefecture, as it would be too costly to reboot the aging reactor.

The company estimates more than 170 billion yen would be needed to beef up safety measures for restarting the reactor that started operation in 1977.

It is expected to take about 30 years to complete the decommissioning of the reactor at a total cost of 40 billion yen, according to Shikoku Electric.

The company is banking on technology cooperation that it agreed on with three other regional utilities last month to cut decommissioning costs.

    Caution: Hanford

The biggest radioactive hazard to the Pacific Northwest might not be in Japan

    By Davis Jones

    | posted on May 05, 2016

…“The amount of radiation in the Hanford area dwarfs the amount arriving on the West Coast of the United States [from Japan] on a scale that is mind-boggling. What is arriving from Fukushima is the result of the meltdowns of three nuclear cores, and it is crossing an ocean. What is stored at Hanford and leeching into the Columbia…is from production that began decades before Fukushima was built. This is not just contamination that is arriving today, or this year. [It] has been saturating the groundwater and ecosystem of the Northwest for more than 70 years.”

On the chance that the speculation is true, glowing neon surfers might boost traction for night surfing.
