KING 5 News, Nov. 20, 2014: Steve Ellingson, a radiation specialist [at Hanford] sought treatment… after he inhaled toxic vapors… Penser North America [administers the DOE insurance system]… The physician paid by Penser… determined “there’s no evidence of work related impairment [and he] most likely encountered an irritating odor”… That physician is Larry Smick… He never met Ellingson in person… His conclusions were based on the review of his medical file… Smick has a longstanding history of dismissing Hanford workers.
KING 5 News transcript, Nov. 20, 2014 (emphasis added): In 2002, Steve Lewis, a Hanford electrician developed burning lungs, chronic nosebleeds… [Dr. Smick] concluded it was allergies from cats or feathers… not vapors vented from the most deadly substance on earth. Did you have allergies before? “I’ve never had an allergy in my life.”… Dr. Smick left a trail of emails showing he was under pressure to keep contractors happy. In an email to his staff… he directed them to quit helping workers get help. “Please do not encourage workers to file compensation claims. We could be invited off the site if that behavior continues.”… A former medical provider that worked under Dr. Smick accused her boss of not putting patient health first, Smick responded… “Occupational medicine is not the same as other types of medicine. You have the business needs of the employer to consider.”
KING 5 News, Oct 14, 2014: Gary Sall… [worked at Hanford] for 28 years… 10 years ago… his brain function got worse and worse. Within 5 years he… could barely speak, hallucinated, and operated on the level of a 4-year-old… Doctors diagnosed him with work-related toxic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disorder… [His wife] Barb documented the suffering in a difficult to watch video taken in 2011… in a hospital bed, trembling and frightened and on a feeding tube… The DOE’s insurer wrote that not Hanford, but alcohol consumption or a B-12 deficiency could be making him sick… He died 3 years ago at the age of 57.
Barbara Sall, Hanford worker: “You totally lose everything… your memories, your mind… Everything’s gone, it’s just a shell… No one should ever see their loved one go through what he went through. It got very, very bad… Once you get sick they get rid of you, you’re no good anymore… [It's] undescribable what they’ve done to my family. They don’t care. They don’t even know we exist… Washington DC is turning its back on the fact that Hanford… is killing people.”
KING 5 News, Oct. 28, 2014 — Barbara Sall: “It is so scary, and they do nothing about it, and I don’t understand why this is still going on… They don’t think that we’re people.”
Tri City Herald, June 8, 2011: “It’s an awful way to go,” [Sall] said. “It eats your brain away. It turns you into nothing.”… “How many people… have to die before [DOE] is held accountable for what it is doing to workers?” asked Lawrence Rouse, who has the [same] disease.
Al Jazeera, Oct 14, 2014: Terry Wattenburger [age 50]… a few years back, he looked like a football player… cancer and lung disease have taken a toll… [he dropped] to 106 pounds… doctors removed his entire stomach… He struggles with… neuromuscular disorder… stomach cancer… nerve damage… “My immune system is totally compromised”… Jerry Ferson [worked] at Hanford… for nearly 30 years… medical records show… brain dysfunction… toxic encephalopathy… neurotoxicity syndrome… “his limbs are jerking all over, that’s hard for me,” said Linda Ferson, his wife. “But the mental aspect of it is the worst… He can’t remember how to turn the oven on.”… “They don’t want to take care of you,” he said. “They want you to die.”

New Documentary Examines Rocky Flats and Colorado’s Cold War Role
And that isn't all. While the plant itself is gone, the land that it covered, the so-called "central operable unit," remains under DOE control because hazardous substance contamination remains. Weapons grade plutonium, after all, can remain in the environment for thousands of years.
In October 2005, the DOE and its contractor completed an accelerated 10-year, $7 billion demolition and cleanup effort, leaving Rocky Flats as it is today, a still contaminated industrial site surrounded by a buffer zone that has become a national wildlife refuge.

Look at some of the human radiation studies done by U.S Atomic Energy Commission:
• In 1953, ”researchers from Harper Hospital in Detroit orally administered iodine-131 to 65 premature and full-term infants”
• “In another AEC study, researchers at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine fed iodine-131 to 28 healthy infants through a gastric tube to test the concentration of iodine in the infants' thyroid glands."
• In 1949, they “released iodine-131 and xenon-133 to the atmosphere which contaminated a 500,000-acre (2,000 km2) area containing three small towns near the Hanford site in Washington

The book “The Plutonium Files” documents more human-radiation experiments done by the AEC:
• “In Nashville, pregnant women were given radioactive mixtures"
• “In Cincinnati, some 200 patients were irradiated over a period of 15 years”
• “In Chicago, 102 people received injections of strontium and caesium solutions.”
• “In Massachusetts, 57 developmentally disabled children were fed radioactive oatmeal in an experiment sponsored by MIT and the Quaker Oats Company.”
• “U.S. soldiers deliberately exposed to nuclear bomb blasts”
“In none of these cases were the subjects informed about the nature of the procedures, and thus could not have provided informed consent.”
“The government covered up most of these radiation mishaps”

If you research to find out how dangerous radiation is to life, you will find that science has assisted the nuke industry in covering up and minimizing the damaging effects of ionizing radiation. Atoms for Peace (nuclear power generation) is the cover used to continue the psychopaths pursuit of plutonium atoms for war. Life thrived on this earth because a thick atmosphere has shielded us from harmful ionizing radiation coming from space. Releasing ionizing radiation into the troposphere where we live is damaging our health and our genomes. How much damage needs to be done before we notice? Less expensive and less damaging sources of energy are available.

And I was being satirical…I would put a ten-year-old with a keen mind up against an adult nuclear vagabond. Just didn't want to call the flamer a fool. He is no fool, he know exactly how to disrupt a list with multiple identities and insults.
Report comment
Speaking of the flamer situation (you may call them trolls…I prefer flamers as they do prefer to burn the whole online community to the ground)…the 2014 dynamics of an online community like Enenews lends itself exceptionally well to constant onslaughts of flamer wars.
Blend in controversial themes of limited main topics (nuclear energy, fallout, nuclear disasters), an Admin who is the sole moderator and wishes to remain anonymous like the free guests.
Add in the vast proliferation of free anonymous throwaway email systems allowing for multiple flamer identities and the stage is set for a Missouri boat ride (Josey Wales style).
Leads to a massive number of nonparticipating guests who regularly read the aggregated news releases, but rarely post themselves. The typical ratio of 1 regular poster for every 100 or more readers. Posters that use the Facebook avenue are far less likely to experience a massive flamer campaign on FB comments. Too risky for the flamers.
Report comment
But be patient…while at times determined flamers with multiple identities wreaked havoc for weeks or months on a user list, it is rare they can keep it up for months. Things intervene…list owners ban some of the most egregious flamer multiple identities, things go wrong at home or work for the spammer/flamer (kids at college flunk out, get arrested, or get pregnant).
Time is the healer for a flame war. That's not saying discussion groups don't die over time…most fall out in the 3 to 5 year range in my long Usenet experience. Web groups can last longer just because there are separate components.
It's also very common on many comment pages to have tremendous turmoil, insults and stronger counter-insults. Could be just a sign of the times of a stressed out fast-paced world.
Report comment
So what could be a solution?
I'm not one to cower in fear or be put off by a slander, especially as I recognize the intent.

One thing we can all do to help the goal is to create an email list of people we know and periodically email enenews articles to them. (and other news showing the true impacts of this criminally insane technology). Calling and emailing reporters is also a great move. Believe me, if approached correctly using facts and an organized presentation, true investigative reporters will listen to us. It only takes one reporter to latch onto a nuclear impacts story. Kind of like how King 5 in Seattle has started their ongoing, "Hanford's Dirty Secrets" series of reports. VoxDie is scared of this trend, which is only going to spread as more people realize what nuclear is; death.

SMR Sodium Moderated Reactors are just the latest iteration of cancer bombs aka nuclear reactors. SMRs have ALWAYS failed and spewed radiation out causing intense radioactive sodium fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish since you cannot use water… It only takes one accident to permanently render a huge area uninhabitable, for thousands of years. Sodium oxidizes explosively when it contacts water, or air when it is heated, which it most certainly will be when it is molten hot right out of the reactor core! Sodium is very highly corrosive. It rapidly ruins metal pipes and reactor vessels meant to keep the radioactive contaminants inside the core and out of our environment. SMR cancer machines are just the latest Pandora's Promise scam to try deceiving us into letting the criminal nukers play God and transform Uranium into their precious precious Plutonium for weapons

It is very windy at Hanford. Since workers are being exposed to radioactive fumes there then we can say for certain that pregnant women are also being exposed if they happen to be downwind. Jebus, I cannot fault you for fighting the good fight and defending the moral high ground against the lies and propaganda from the nuker trolls. Keep on keepin on! I have found it a simple task to distill the pro nuke vs anti nuke argument into the following points:
Nuclear reactors PRO: electricity, (weapons if you are a sadist)
Nuclear reactors ANTI: cancer, birth defects, heart issues, autism and other genetic diseases of all manner, nuclear weapons proliferation.
When you account for the astronomical costs of "storing" the spent nuclear reactor fuels, which the pro nukers never accurately do, then the "cheap" nuclear electricity becomes incalculably expensive. How many WIPPs and Yuccas need to be mined out to (not so safely…) store all of the thousands of tons of existing nuclear spent fuel waste?
Wind, Solar and natural gas as a on-call generator can replace nuclear. We MUST begin constructing more of these relatively green electrical generating options immediately so we can simultaneously commence shutting down and decommissioning all of the cancer bombs, er I mean nuclear reactors.

Opening a reactor for refueling releases a spike of radiation for a couple days. These operational releases are not made public and, in fact, are covered up in the yearly totals that are made public. Most of the yearly total comes in that one bad day. Every NPP does a refueling about once a year. Requiring the operators to inform the public of that bad day would help us to limit the cumulative lifetime radiation dose we each acquire. Industry doesn’t want us to know how dangerous ionizing radiation of any dose can be.
Ian Fairlie's website discusses the linear no-threshold theory of radiation risks.
"Regardless of dissenting views on LNT, the reality is that most if not all concepts used in radiation protection today are strongly based on the LNT theory. For example, LNT allows radiation doses (i) to be averaged within an organ or tissue, (ii) to be added from different organs, and (iii) to be added over time. The LNT also underpins the concepts of absorbed dose, effective dose, committed dose, and the use of dose coefficients (eg Sv per Bq of a radionuclide)."

Japan’s 2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster still fracturing families via Los Angeles Times
When the massive magnitude 9 earthquake rumbled through Fukushima prefecture in March 2011, it swelled the seas and shook the earth. But long after the ground stopped trembling, the disaster has continued to fracture families like that of Yoshinobu Segawa.
With radiation from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant still a concern, Segawa, 52, a middle school art teacher, and his wife, Yuki, 39, decided that keeping their children in Fukushima was too risky. So they found a new home 140 miles away, in Saitama prefecture.
But Segawa had been employed here for 25 years and switching jobs wouldn’t be easy. To get a position elsewhere, he said, he’d have to take an employment test. “I’m getting old and I’m not sure I would fit in as a teacher in Saitama or Tokyo,” he said, “although I’m good enough for Fukushima.”
So for the last 2½ years, Segawa’s wife and their children — ages 6, 4 and 3 — have been in Saitama. Every other week, Segawa makes the trip to see them. In October, the couple had a fourth child, who was born prematurely. The boy has heart problems that doctors say will require two surgeries.
The couple can’t help but wonder whether being in Fukushima may have some connection. “It doesn’t feel good,” said Segawa, who is on paternity leave until March.

disaster, many families like the Segawas remain stressed and divided. Other couples have divorced, and suicides related to the nuclear disaster also appear to be on the rise, said Tokyo-based lawyer Kenichiro Kawasaki of the Save Fukushima Children Lawyers’ Network.
[...]
Naomi Nagasawa, 29, divorced her husband five months after the disaster. “Our divorce isn’t directly connected to the disaster, but our values differed on radiation and we argued a lot,” she said, adding that she had deeper concerns than her spouse did. “I have several acquaintances who have also divorced.”
Now Nagasawa is raising her 4-year-old son, Sora, in an area where radioactivity remains a worry, but she hopes to be able to move away next year. She keeps Sora inside most of the time and has enrolled him in a nursery school that drives youngsters more than 30 miles away to Yamagata prefecture daily to play outdoors.
“I wanted my child to play in nature,” Nagasawa said.
Sora’s teacher, Taeko Henmi, said the transportation costs were covered by private donations and government subsidies.
Just how cautious one should be about outdoor exposure, food, water and other issues is a source of friction among residents of Fukushima these days.

But nowadays, most have returned to buying Fukushima-grown produce, reassured by government testing that has found it to be safe.

A 2013 World Health Organization report predicted there would be an uptick of thyroid cancer, breast cancer and leukemia in Fukushima prefecture in coming years.
Masamichi Nishio, honorary director of the Hokkaido Cancer Center, agreed, saying the government has not sufficiently warned the public of possible health effects from exposure to radioactivity.
Toshihide Tsuda, a professor of epidemiology at Okayama University, said cancers could be prevented by limiting exposure time in areas with high radiation rates.
And he strongly agrees with Nishio.
“I find it problematic the Japanese public hasn’t been properly informed by the government to this date because [low levels of radioactive particles] can trigger cancer,” he said.

Germany may shut down eight more coal power plants: document
BERLIN Nov 23, 2014
(Reuters) – Germany is working on a new law to force energy companies to shut down several more coal-fired power plants as it tries to reach ambitious climate goals, a document seen by Reuters showed on Sunday.
According to a draft legislation prepared by the economy ministry, energy companies will be asked to reduce carbon emissions by at least 22 million tonnes by 2020….
The latest measure is part of a raft of new climate rules which Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet is expected to decide on Dec. 3. The program will also include steps to boost energy efficiency.
Merkel's government wants renewables to make up between 40-45 percent of power generation by 2025 and 55-60 percent by 2035 – targets that experts say are ambitious for an industrialized country.
The European Union agreed last month a pledge to cut greenhouse gases by at least 40 percent in 2030

Anti-CSG groups says use of radioactive materials should be disclosed
November 24, 2014
Peter Hannam
Environment Editor, The Sydney Morning Herald
EXCLUSIVE
Radioactive material is being used at some coal seam gas drilling sites in NSW and Queensland, raising concerns about potential health and environmental impacts.
A radiation management licence issued to US-based drilling company Halliburton shows it is permitted to use caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, for drilling by AGL at Gloucester, in the northern Hunter Valley and for Santos in the Pilliga forests near Narrabri.
Drillers deploy devices containing CS-137 to measure the composition of gas and water deep underground, with the isotope emitting gamma rays to operate like a miniature X-ray.
Produced in nuclear reactors, the material is potentially deadly and among the main radiation concerns at failed power stations at Chernobyl and Fukushima…
Environmental groups say the use of the radioactive material is not disclosed in the CSG projects' Review of Environment Factors (REF) and Environmental Impact Statements, nor does it appear by name in Materials Safety Data Sheets.
An anti-coal seam gas campaigner at Gloucester, Jennifer Schoelpple, said AGL had played up the use of much more benign chemicals used for hydraulic fracturing – fracking – but had downplayed…

the role of caesium.
"No matter how thoroughly you search 'under your kitchen sink' or how scrupulously you check the ingredients of your condiments and 'household products', you are highly unlikely to lay your hands on any CS-137 in your family home," Ms Schoelpple said.
"If they are so transparent, why don't they document the most dangerous thing they use?"
Vicki Perrin, from Lock the Gate in Queensland, said farmers allowing CSG drilling on their land and the neighbouring communities should be made aware of the risks: "Farmers need to know there is a radioactive source on their site."
Ms Perrin, who worked for three years as an occupational health technician at Olympic Dam in South Australia, said communities should be told where the radioactive material is being stored, what the arrangements are to ensure devices aren't lost and for long-term monitoring.
"It particularly worries me that there are exposure standards for workers but no exposure standards for the community," she said.

GALVESTON, Texas -
Safety and storage issues mean a World War II-era ship converted to a barge-mounted nuclear reactor will not arrive in Texas this year.
The Galveston County Daily News reported Saturday that the Army Corps of Engineers will work with Galveston leaders on a new timetable.
City council members this month asked for more information from the Corps about the former USS Sturgis, which will be scrapped. Critics raised safety and project input concerns.
The decommissioned floating nuclear power plant is expected to be towed from Virginia to Galveston. The nuclear reactor and fuel have been removed. The Corps intends to remove the remaining materials for storage.

… For decades, Sandia and the New Mexico Environment Department claimed that only low-level radioactive and chemical wastes were buried in (The Mixed Waste Landfill).
New records uncovered by Citizen Action New Mexico clearly demonstrate that high-level radioactive waste from nuclear fuel experiments was buried in the dump.
Following the 1979 Three Mile Island commercial nuclear reactor accident in Pennsylvania, Sandia was tasked with finding out what happens to high-level nuclear fuel during meltdowns.
Sandia conducted dozens of experiments on nuclear fuel from around the world in its Annular Core Research Reactor and the waste was disposed in the Mixed Waste Landfill.
The Mixed Waste Landfill is a 2.6-acre dumpsite, located in southeast Albuquerque within Kirtland Air Force Base, where Sandia is located.
It contains an estimated 1,500,000 cubic feet of radioactive and mixed hazardous wastes from the reactor meltdown experiments and the research and development of nuclear weapons.
Plutonium, cesium, strontium, depleted uranium, beryllium, PCBs and chlorinated solvents were disposed in plastic bags, cardboard boxes and steel drums. In 2009, a dirt cover was installed.
Recently Sandia applied to the Environment Department for a certificate saying that they have completed cleanup of the dump. The Environment Department made a preliminary determination to approve the request. The public meeting and

associated public comment period is part of the administrative process to obtain the certificate.
Citizen Action encourages the public to make comments that request a public hearing; ask the Environment Department to deny the cleanup certificate; and ask the Environment Department to order Sandia to clean up and safely store the wastes in the dump.
Dave McCoy, of Citizen Action New Mexico, said, “High-level waste disposal requires a deep geologic repository that won’t leak for 10,000 years. Leaving high-level waste in the shallow Mixed Waste Landfill for future generations is nothing short of an environmental crime.”
For more information, please visit Citizen Action’s website at radfreenm.org, and Sandia’s information in the Lobo Vault at repository.unm.edu and search for the Mixed Waste Landfill.
