Assumption parish officials say they will be notifying people who remain in the area before drilling begins on the relief well. They say it could cause lots of a noise and some shaking during the first few days.
Officials with GOHSEP say the sinkhole has grown it is now 476 feet (from the northeast to the southwest) by 640 feet (from the northwest to the southeast). State and local officials monitoring the situation will continue with regular flyovers throughout the duration of the incident.

this means the salt dome is collapsing, material is flowing in and the butane is starting to force it's way out.
I'd just evac as many people as you can and let it blow.
Get 30 miles away, they'll be fine. Maybe less, it's a ground burst dirty bomb

I don't yet understand the butane involvement … "nearby"?? Where is it, and how did 1.5 million barrels of it get there? Is it a natural phenomenon or is it some kind of storage deal? Thanks!

Maggie123,
Here is a great video that will get you all caught up.
It is storage…not a natural phenomenon.

Thanks rPumpkin and Markww. RPumpkin – your link was to a great vid! I really appreciate comprehensive approaches to examining cause/effect, and the video is great! (I'll check more of his videos, I can imagine the time heeded for his work … real dedication for him to share as he does!)
(It's likely I've spent a few minutes in a salt dome … 1950's elementary school field trip in Kansas. Terribly ironic … on one day we visited an underground salt mine and a reformatory for youth. Salt mines, reformatories, … something the adults wanted us to learn?)
Back on topic – I've paid quite a bit of attention to tectonic theory but had not yet added the insight of consequences of pressure across such vast distances. Makes sense given explanation for Rocky Mtns. Like many, I have tended to imagine "back when earth changes were more chaotic" – as if some significant lasting stability had been reached. Great video!

Maggie there are hundreds of salt domes around the Gulf Of Mexico and the inland areas that were made when the earth was forming. To stockpile oil gas and other natural resources companies drilled into the domes used hot water to melt the sat deposit and then filled and capped the domes for future savings. That brings us up to now. Mark

I'm confused about the rationality of storing nuclear waste and oil/gas etc in a salt dome.
If hot water can melt through the salt dome, wouldn't it be logical that these other things would break it down as well, and much more easily?

on my post sat was not correct replace with SALT

IMHO I think the butane is a product of the gas plants. When the gas comes out of the well it is a mixture of butane, methane, propane, and others. The gas planrt separates all the hydrocarbons from the methane. There is really not much of a market for butane. I don't think there is much butane separated from the gas but the gas companies probably have been storing it for a long time. Bik lighters don't sell that well this days.

Drilling has made swiss cheese of the Gulf..
Unfortunately..there will be a price paid.
And the people in the area..will have to pay it.

The fact of the matter is that these sinkholes have been known to exist for decades. Long before any homes or anything else was built there. But they went ahead and built on top of them. So who is to blame?
