    Foreshock…

wasnt’ the 9.2 quake preceded bya series of R5 quakes?

as screwed up as the plants are, if they have a M7 quake, i can’t imagine the jury rigged cooling systems holding up, or Plant 4 or even plants 5 or 6 doing well.

(Note:Fukushima diary is down at this time i believe.)
Where would they get nuke workers in the event of another fuel pool complication similar to Jan 1st quake?? Particularly in view of a general pattern showing the public are becoming more informed. I keep thinking TEPCO are running out of skilled labour.

Here is a Fukushima Diary cached paged still left on the server with a post i have not seen before. It relates to the recent earthquakes. I am not a seismologist, and maybe someone here has a better insight into these observations posted just before Fukushima Diary went down temporarily.

“Fukushima citizen “Recent earthquake is something different”
Posted by Mochizuki on January 9th, 2012

Fukushima citizens tweet that recent series of the earthquake feel different from usual ones.

    福島に震災後からずっと住んでいて直感が鋭い人なら気づいてると思うんだ、急に地震の揺れ方とかが変わったよね?地下で何かが爆発してるみたいなドカンてくる地震に変わった事。

I think everyone has noticed it if they live in Fukushima since 311, and paid attention to earthquakes. Suddenly, the way of shaking has changed, isn’t it ? feels like something is exploding underground, like a bomb.

I feel that too. It feels as if I was sleeping in the double bunk beds and someone knocked me up from the lower bunk. It comes up from the underground all of a sudden ,like bang. I woke up several times to be surprised at the knocking up shock. My heart beats heard, can’t be reassured for around the clock.

    私は隣のI県ですが同感です。家族も周囲の人も一様に感じています。普通の地震ではなく、何かが爆発しているような短時間の揺れ。40年間感じたことのない揺れをほぼ毎日体感しています。

I live in Ibaraki, but my family, and people around me feel the same way too. It’s not a normal earthquake, but a short quake as if something was exploding underground. I haven’t felt that quake for 40 years. It happens everyday.

The only reason to deny the possibility of hydrovolcanic explosion underground is because the radiation level is not spiking up after the earthquake, but I doubt if the steam comes right above the epicenter.”

IMHO, you would have to look at the waveforms as recorded at the seismographic monitoring stations. If there is some non-natural cause for the EQ’s, it will probably show up in the wave signatures.

A seismologist would probably have to review the data to determine whether or not the recent EQ’s have natural causes, or not.

Am not sure how things affecting geologic strata under a given location (like tons of molten nuclear fuel for example) would change the “seismic signature” of an earthquake. That is for greater minds than mine, and probably seismology experts.

BTW, I know how to find the stations and look at the waveform signatures for U.S. locations, but haven’t figured out, yet, what kind of system the Japanese are using.

Tokyo Univ. has some kind of seismic monitoring system, but it’s not clear to me yet whether or not the public has access to the data at the seismic monitoring stations (drum recorders, digital data, or whatever technology they happen to be using).

There are other Japanese Univ’s studying EQ activity. Does anyone who is from Japan and visits this site know what Japanese data the public can access?

Thanks HoTaters…The site was down, ….it was from a cached page.. I was in the midst of preparing to go to the local hardware store to obtain some 44 gallon drums of paint and a spray gun to somehow scrawl a message possible to see using high resolution from outer-space in case this possibly last message from Fukushima Diary was not heard by at least a single cell of sentient life from, or not from this ill fated planet.

Following a tangential trajectory, i was very pleased some of our terrestrial folk are having some success with gamma spectroscopy, which is my main avenue of obtaining data in the present, other than here.

  • As if possible Corium blob underground explosions are not enough, can the ‘live’ video feeds be trusted at this point?

Here is a ‘live’ video feed of FUKU Unit 1, that shows a floating crane… underneath a white line…

    http://fukushima-diary.com/2012/01/ghost-crane-of-fukushima-live-camera/

Could this be an edited ‘live’ feed, showing only what they want below the white line? Maybe someone made a mistake and forgot to add in the bottom half of the crane in this ‘edit’?

Could the corium from one or more reactors/spent fuel pools have melted down so far that they are now ‘exploding’ underground?

Why would there be multiple explosions? Could there be more than one steam explosion? Why would there be no above ground evidence? How far down would a corium steam or criticality explosion have to be in order for it to not show up above ground/

    Consider this:

Geothermal Experiment May Cause Small Quakes In Central Oregon
    Vince Patton | December 23, 2011 | Bend, OR

    From this article:

There is likely to be one side effect of forcing so many cracks into the subterranean rocks: lots of very small earthquakes.

    Most under magnitude one.

“In this case we’re not talking about earthquakes so much as micro-seismic events. Generally they don’t get large enough to be felt,” according to Osborn.

Osborn says a few quakes could reach magnitude 3.5 or 4.

Are the Jan. 9 and Jan 10 reports about the same two earthquakes? Or are they about two different sets? Need clarification for Nuclear Hotseat today. Facebook me directly on Nuclear Hotseat page. Thanks! — Libbe.
