Information about this was on the net 2nd April. The headline suggests this is RECENT development and I am actually relieved to see that it is not, however does that mean there will be info about the rainwater NOW being contaminated in several months time?
I question why the headline doesn’t make that clear. Sorry guys, but that smacks of sensationalism.

Thanks for pointing-out that this is recirculated old news. The dates are found at the bottom of the chart.
Report Comment
You say that “the dates are found at the bottom…” actually, the dates are prominently quoted for the samples IN EVERY SENTENCE OF THE POST!!! On my screen, the dates are less than an inch from the headline… so if it is misleading, it doesn’t lead you very far for the whole story, but the nature of ANY headline is to pull the reader in with a very simplified phrase. If you feel mislead by headlines, perhaps you should understand that headlines are not now, nor ever were, meant as the way to communicate the story to the readers. Headlines are meant to pique your interest to find out about the story. A headline should not make you feel informed, it should make you SEEK to be informed.
On the subject of “old news”: for something to be “old news” I would say that first the public must be aware of it. Since at least 90 of every 100 people I talk to have no idea that ANY nuclear material reached the U.S. I would not take exception to someone circulating the story/data.

This is a crisis…

LOL! Contact TEPCO or the NRC or the IAEA I think…they could point you in the right direction. LOL! What they haven’t figured out yet, though, is that politically savvy people know now how to recognize their disruptive little games and not let it interfere with the important consciousness-raising that this site is doing every day. If it needs to be “sensational” then let it be so. Too few people are alarmed about Fukushima or even know it is happening anymore. The more awareness the better I think.
I agree, too, that if a new angle comes out on what is possibly an old story, I don’t mind seeing it again. There is so much news, and I don’t like to miss anything. What seems “new” to me about the study above is the admission of how many different radionuclides landed in CA. Older reports seemed focused on just one at a time. Also, they started the test too early I think, just before it landed in N America.

Im a quiet lurker here, i have been obsessively following this because im in the sf bay area and have two young daughters. I am so lost on the measurements, i was hoping someone here could help me.
When I saw the headline it freaked me out because I thought that the” safe” limit according to the epa was 3 piC per liter, and I remember reading that in hawaii they had measured 18piC/liter I think. But I don’t remember it being 430 yikes! So am I remembering it wrong? Was it measured in bq/liter maybe? And how does that equate to sieverts?
Oh gosh im so sorry, i never took physics. I dont mean to waste anyones time here. Im just trying to figure out if i should be evacuating my girls to south america
Report Comment
You are correct, it is is 3 pci/liter. (or at least it was!)
You are not wasting anyone’s time. Thank YOU for your observation.
As far as going to the southern hemisphere. I don’t know. It might be prudent to have passports ready. On the other hand when India or Iran or some mid-east nuke thing occurs then it won’t matter which hemisphere. So, probably the best thing to do is learn what to do to protect ourselves and our loved ones as best we can where we stand.
Like teaching kids about brushing teeth and washing hands. Now we must add, don’t eat or drink what you don’t know is okay. And remind them NOT to catch raindrops on their tongues.
Yes, that’s not how life should be. Yet, it is what it is and we must deal with it if future generations are to survive and prosper.
For those who ignore these “please be aware” warnings their ‘assessed risk’ will ‘most likely’ increase exponentially.
That is why our non-transparent government’s actions on this matter are indeed criminal. I’ll bet the Obama kids have their food personally tested prior to every meal.

Chasaha, do you have any advise on how I can protect my girls? I use bentonite clay in our water and give them their vitamins. I also give them two drops of kelp iodine every few days. We stay out of the rain. I soak our veggies in water with bentonite clay, and we don’t drink milk anymore. I am stocking up on extra sharp cheddar while I can. What else can I do?
I couldn’t imagine one of them with leukemia or heart problems
Not to mention I don’t want them to suffer as adults because of THEIR babies being sick. Its all so hard to think about. I wish I could protect them but I dont know what else to do. I read about chellation etc but can’t find most of the thinggs I read about. And I don’t feel versed enough in any of it to trust I wont do more harm than good. Kwim?

@chaossquared What you are doing by trying to understand all of this is a great first step. Just by being aware you are ahead of the majority.
Remember the 4 C’s.
1. Control your air
2. Control your water
3. Control your food
4. Control yourself
Of course, we can only try to do our best in order to decrease our risk depending on where we live and the available resources at hand. Like money for things such as a Rad Detector, Hepa Filters, Water Filters. Even buying the supplements can cost. Not everyone, including myself, can afford ANY of these things outright. I think most Americans are in the same boat. So I do the best I can.
Air – I leave my car windows up and have a good filter on the AC unit. (I have 2 N95 masks for emergency)
Water – Currently I get my water from a deep well. I am told this should be good for at least several years.
Food – I have stopped milk. Mostly all dairy, except aged cheeses. Washing all veggies at this time. Juicy fruits like Peaches I also avoid unless I know where they’ve come from.
Self – I try to have some FUN every day.
I do think about the psychological affect on kids. I don’t think it’s discussed much because there is no good answer. Kids know when somethings up. How does one best explain this to kids? I don’t have that answer, but I think they should know at some point. Not sure what age is best. (my opinion)

Hi! Yours is a great question, and that is what we are supposed to be here for, to calmly answer some of these queries. My understanding is that 30 pico-curies per litre was the EPA standard for cow milk limits. However, the tricky health physics bastards always apply different standards to different substance. Thus, the rainwater has a different standard from the drinking water, and these are different standards than those for cow milk.

I suspect it is part of the overall “mystique” of radiation that they try to increase, rather than decrease. We need to keep asking as many questions as it takes until that “mystique” is torn away.

Multiple meltdowns are threatened worldwide by a Solar Superstorm.
NASA has now published new data showing the odds of such a storm have increased. NOAA sees the maximum threat during the next 3 to 5 years with a peak in 2013.
NASA warns a Solar Superstorm can collapse critical power grids worldwide for months or even years.
Nuclear plants without grid power for a month can experience a meltdown.
Prevention is possible and so is grid protection.
But, to date, the necessary massive mobilization is missing.
Ironically, it could reboot the economy and generate jobs.

Note the contradictions in the health physics info from the EPA website, below:
“Did the levels found in rainwater exceed EPA drinking water MCLs? If so, why shouldn’t people be concerned?
* While the levels in the rainwater exceeded the applicable Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 3piC/L for drinking water, it is important to note that the corresponding MCL for iodine-131 was calculated based on long-term chronic exposures over the course of a lifetime 70 years. The levels seen in rainwater were expected to be relatively short in duration.”
COMMENT: WHY THE HELL USE A CHRONIC OVER 70 YRS FIGURE WHEN WE ALL KNOW IT IS A FAST-LIVED RADIONUCLIDE WITH HALF-LIFE OF 8.SOMETHING DAYS? ALSO, NOTE THE REPEATED MATHEMATICAL FANTASIES: WE ‘EXPECT’ RAINWATER CONCENTRATIONS TO BE OF SHORT DURATION. HOW DO YOU KNOW? WHAT HAPPENS IF IT KEEPS ON RAINING ‘SMALL AMOUNTS’ OF CS134 AND CS137 FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, EPA??
Report Comment
FURTHER PROBLEMS FROM THE EPA WEBSITE:
“How often does EPA sample precipitation?
* EPA scientists routinely test precipitation samples from more than 30 sites in the U.S. The stations submit precipitation samples to the EPA lab as rainfall, snow or sleet occurs. Under routine circumstances, samples are analyzed by EPA scientists monthly. EPA performs gamma analysis on each sample, followed by the routine analyses. Routine analysis of precipitation for gamma emissions takes about a week from the time the lab receives the sample. This is to ensure the proper analysis and quality assurance (QA) takes place before the results are released. The tests for specific radioactive material may take longer.”(See: http://www.epa.gov/japan2011/japan-faqs.html#rainwater)
WHY CAN’T THE UNITED STATES AFFORD TO USE SAMPLING TECHNOLOGY THAT COUNTS ALPHA AND BETA AND NOT JUST GAMMA? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? WHY DO THEY THINK ONLY MEASURING GAMMA IS AT ALL SUFFICIENT? THAT WAY, FOR EX, THEY NEVER PICK UP ANY PLUTONIUM, AN ALPHA-EMITTER! WE CAN SPEND MORE MONEY ON OUR ‘HOMELAND SECURITY’ THAN THAT, YOU TRICKY EPA BASTARDS.
