Humidity, heat, radiation in reactor buildings, NHK, May 20, 2011:

[...] As for the No. 3 reactor building, the utility says they may have to find another way to inject nitrogen and also shield staff from the radiation in order to work inside.

These difficulties may affect the company’s road map to stabilize the reactors.

        Question for you tacoma,

Why isn’t it a relativity simple matter to simply add more boron to reset the neutron-absorption clock and in this way buy some more time?

        Report Comment

        • Ok… BUDDY But im only gonna explain it one more time..

          In short->
The failing boron that is already present in the rpv bio accumulates in addition to the salt inside the reactor, as a barrier separating the fuel from the active boron…

          Not only that…

The longer the fuel is molting, the larger mass it gains. Thus the amount of neutrons attempting to start the chain reaction increases Making the failing boron even less effective.

Even worse, tepco only has roughly 400 – 800 ton’s of boron on hand… So when making a move from 3 – 15 tons of water in one reactor alone is a real indicator that the supply of boron is growing limited as well…
          A. Not stabilizing fuel
          B. Having less effect.
          C. almost not a viable option, due to limited quantity.

This means there will be no cage holding back the lion…

Please read this decay heat analysis
Decay heat starts at about 7% of fission heat and falls from there. A while back they estimated the current heat was at the equivalent of 1 to 2 million Watts which fits my calculations. It takes quite a bit of water flow to remove that much heat. It is not a sign of fission. Reports said more boron in on the way, they’ll use it as needed to prevent fission.

Here is some very rough math (estimate is based only on Iodine 131 decay which is a major fast component, slower products give off much less heat).
1250 MW thermal (850 MW electrical) before shut down energy produced – rated power.
400 MW waste heat when running (mostly to ocean)
87.5 MW decay heat day zero (7% after shut down)
43.8 MW decay heat day 8
21.9 MW decay heat day 16
10.9 MW decay heat day 24
5.5 MW decay heat day 32
2.7 MW decay heat day 40
1.4 MW decay heat day 48

This estimate will be off somewhat, but it should give people the general idea of what to expect. The longer since fission, the easier cooling gets. It still takes quite a bit of water. If the fuel were still intact it could be moved to a fuel pond within months. Most of the fuel in the pond gives off far lower heat, with the most recently added giving off the most.

The use of Nitrogen for food Storage

    Prep Update

Purchased two food grade air tight storage containers to store from COSTCO. They stack and have screw in, rotating lids. Looked ideal for longer term grain storage.

Testing them now, will buy more. It allows the grain or food to be accessed while still in a stack. Very convenient, and pest proof.

This article reminds me to obtain a nitrogen tank to stabilize and preserve the food from oxidation. I must look into it.

    Air Quality Report

The filter screen installation will continue this weekend. The thirty 36 inch screens will be next. Smaller screens done. Dust reduction is pronounced and pleasing.

Room HEPA quality air purifer operating in one room 24 hrs. Interesting, room feels cooler due to wind chill factor, air in constant motion. Two medical grade HEPA on way.

    Water Quality Progress

Finally got the last part to upgrade the kitchen RO to 100 gallon per day production. Working on this now.

        Inhalation of Radioactive Particles

The greatest short term danger presented by the Fukushima nuclear volcano, is radioactive particles that randomly float about attached to dust particles, water droplets etc. They are highly charged, and have “static cling”.

Dust control is the name of the game in reducing the possibility of inhalation. There is no safer way to keep dust (and the radioactive particles that cling to them), out of the home, than to shut your windows.

When away from home shut your windows.

Seal off unused windows, with blue painters tape and plastic sheeting to prevent dust infiltration.

When you are not using a room, shut your windows. Look for any way to decrease dust in the home.

In tropical environments, and southern states, temperature is problematic and some ventilation is needed.

This is where opening a window or two for ventilation is important, during sleep or work or cooking. This is where the PollenTec product that I have installed comes in, and yes we have installed it to keep a limited number of windows opened. Two of the smaller sliding windows that are opened by 7 inches, are double filtered with PollenTec screens and also Safeguard Window Filters, which fit into the internal window track and allows the window to slide shut against it. We have security grills over these windows that are left open, for safety at night.

Also, when I receive my TRACS medical grade HEPA air purification units, I will be running them 24/7. Air quality is a concern in the new permanently radioactive environment, because the fallout never stops coming. It is now a MAD MAX world. Our efforts must be constant.

The TRACS units have been certified at ZERO particulate outflow by laser particulate survey meters. An impressive performance.

Safeguard window filters are manufactured by REP industires, In of Lansdale, PA.

        http://www.repindustries.com

Dust has been remarkably less since installing PollenTec. PollenTec carries an electrostatic charge which draws the dust particle onto the screening material, instead of passing through into the house.

No protective measure can stop the possibility of inhalation, but it can reduce that probability.

The cost of PollenTec & HEPA air purification is initially high, but the cost of inhalation of radioactive particles carries the higher price.

Just a quick example of why you should not believe everything you read:

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20266-how-josef-oehmens-advice-on-fukushima-went-viral.html?full=true

But Oehmen’s predictions regarding radiation leakage have been cut. His original assertion that “there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors” was bold even at the time he was writing – and has since proved incorrect. For anyone in and around the Fukushima reactors, the radiation is certainly “significant” – although nuclear experts have repeatedly stated Fukushima will not be another Chernobyl.

    Josef,

A simple “I was wrong” would help.

Or perhaps, a little goading from a mere Math Honours major might help:

    Josef, You were wrong.

Now put your education to good use and help us figure this mess out!

    Cheers,
    b.

  • the presence of hydrogen means that the rods were in a state known as “annealing”, meaning the zirconium present in the external coating of the rods is violently reacting against oxygen. Oxygen could only be present in the event the fuel temperatures had risen above boiling point…. The reason that the fuel is rising thermally is due to the process of fission taking place… Meaning the fuel cells are not contained properly in a closed cooling system, so they want to light up and create that 500k megawatts of electricity.

So in short uncontrolled fission taking place inside the zirconium cells, lead to a temperature spike inside the core fuel cells to reactor 1. Once the heat reached beyond boiling point the tops of the fuel rods were exposed to the now present oxygen. Creating a violent reaction damaging the rods… This allowed the nuclear fuel pellets to escape their containment, dropping to the bottom of the reactor core. At that point Tepco then had no choice but to induce nitrogen into the reactor (as the melting of zirconium creates vast amounts of hydrogen)…

While the nitrogen settled the hydrogen the remaining fuel collected in the bottom of the reactor, creating so much fission the fuel melted through 6 feet of metal and concrete landing in the reactors basement. Now were playing a dangerous waiting game. The GE reactor design has an emergency platform designed under the reactors containment in the event a meltdown was to occur, that feature was built to not only prolong a meltdown but also prevent fission as best it can…

However, with the fuel heating up, you must consider that the water being implored with high levels of boron are doing little to nothing to prevent the fission from occuring… That being said, Its only going to be a short amount of time before the fuel likely surpasses the emergency system, and makes its way into the water table. After that happens, soil and water will produce steam clouds that will contaminate vast areas of the planet… =ing the evacuation of the site… Game Over.

#5 and #6 will blast very soon, now I am convinced. Tacomagroove was right on this.

And this will be THE DAY. Everybody in the world will say WHAT? Why #5 or #6? This will be the first your real panic. And the last panic of humanity.

The world, in very short time, will come through panic-buying, money systems not functioning, chaos, looting, martial law.

The blame will be shifted on Japan. Everybody will be hating japanese, this is natural instinct. And world bankers as usual will get away. This is mafia tactic and they have learned it well. Forget the puppet governments, they are corrupt to the core. By the way bankers don’t love their children. This is why they don’t care what will hapen to life on earth.

MSM blocade of news from Japan is actually very simple to understand. It’s trivial. Japanese government asked world governments to cooperate and not allow “radiation rumours” to spread because “it hurts Japan economy”. Who would question such request, having seen tsunami devastation.

But remember what I will say now. Try to understand how the world works and who are the people really to blame. Because when you’ll know you’ll soon die, you’ll go hunting.

Is there anything at all in the human spirit, the goodness, courage and intelligence that could avert this global tragedy? Have the millennia of human fighting for survival all been in vain?
