UPI: Fukushima plume to reach U.S. West Coast in months; Measurable increase in radioactive material — Study: Prolonged exposure for California lasting 10 years; Hits Hawaii early 2014… may already be surrounded (PHOTO)

UPI, Aug. 28, 2013: Fukushima radioactive plume being tracked toward U.S. West Coast […] The radioactive plume from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster will reach U.S. shores within 3 years of the date of the incident, Australian researchers say. […] “Observers on the West Coast of the United States will be able to see a measurable increase in radioactive material three years after the event,” researcher Erik van Sebille said in an ARC release Wednesday. “However, people on those coastlines should not be concerned as the concentration of radioactive material quickly drops below World Health Organization safety levels as soon as it leaves Japanese waters.” […]

Surface (0-200m) of Cesium-137 concentrations (Bq/m3) by (a) April 2012, (b) April 2014 (c) April 2016 and (d) April 2021 — Hawaii seen in black square (SOURCE: Rossi, et al.)

Phys.org, Aug. 28, 2013: […] [Eddies and giant whirlpools] direct the radioactive particles to different areas along the US west coast. “Although some uncertainties remain around the total amount released and the likely concentrations that would be observed, we have shown unambiguously that the contact with the north-west American coasts will not be identical everywhere,” said Dr Vincent Rossi. “Shelf waters north of 45°N will experience higher concentrations during a shorter period, when compared to the Californian coast. […] The plume will be forced down deeper into the ocean toward the subtropics before rising up again along the southern Californian shelf.” […] Eventually over a number of decades, a measurable but otherwise harmless signature of the radiation will spread into other ocean basins, particularly the Indian and South Pacific oceans. […]

Abstract of Multi-decadal projections of surface and interior pathways of the Fukushima Cesium-137 radioactive plume, October 2013 (print): […] The simulations suggest that the contaminated plume would have been rapidly diluted below 10,000 Bq/m3 by the energetic Kuroshio Current and Kurushio Extension by July 2011. Based on our source function of 22 Bq/m3, which sits at the upper range of the published estimates, waters with Cs-137 concentrations >10 Bq/m3 are projected to reach the northwestern American coast and the Hawaiian archipelago by early 2014. Driven by quasi-zonal oceanic jets, shelf waters north of 45°N experience Cs-137 levels of 10–30 Bq/m3 between 2014 and 2020, while the Californian coast is projected to see lower concentrations (10–20 Bq/m3) slightly later (2016–2025). This late but prolonged exposure is related to subsurface pathways of mode waters, where Cs-137 is subducted toward the subtropics before being upwelled from deeper sources along the southern Californian coast. The model suggests that Fukushima-derived Cs-137 will penetrate the interior ocean and spread to other oceanic basins over the next two decades and beyond. […]

As well as side steps polonium and strontium . The above website has various studies on individual isotopes just type fukushima polonium. Fukushima strontium. Ect.

    • Note both articles show that main stream media had blamed high level contaminated tuna on migrating tuna. Completely side stepping past studies. Furthermore at 10NW an hour a specimen will recieve 10 x 10 x 24 BQ external dose daily. Leading to widest 5 x 10 x 24 bq internal dose.

So stating that a dose rate of 10bq m3. Completely downplays the internal and external dose rate of species living within the environment. Also note that all future rain from march 2013 and so on will be accumulated by oceanic convection. Leading to a rise in our local radiation doses on land.

Which would lead to a constant rate of 2.5BQ external dose pet rain cycle.

Winter will be worse. @ 5bq per dose rate due to eastern convection.

      • Main point of above post is that it's not due to migration… It's due to contaminated environment in respect of bio accumulation. Hence the radiation is already coastal to the united states of America.

And it's not a plume. Plumes have ends.

It's more of a stream or river.

Plumes have a leading edge, but not necessarily an end, such as the plume of jet fuel and other contaminants that Jet Propulsion Laboratory dumped for decades into the soil where I grew up, which contaminated the groundwater. Plume in hydrodynamics is effluent that comes from a source and then spreads and widens outward.

EPA data shows large quantities of Iodine 131 (I-131). This is a dangerous isotope as it goes into the thyroid and attacks the thyroid. You really need a thyroid.

However I-131 doesnt last long, its half life is 8 days, so in 32 days its half of half of half of half, or 1/16, roughly its 95% gone in a month.

Fresh EPA reports of I-131 in the USA mean not JUST that TEPCO leaked some tanks, its that they have a fresh reaction going on.

The melted cores are huge, around 100 tons, and they are hell on earth. If they are cooled or separated they won't "go off", but if they are jostled by an earthquake, or the cooling water stops, they can start an uncontained nuclear reaction, which is clearly what is happening now. Most of 3 cores (now called corium) are deep under the buildings, impossible to get to.

This is not good. Japan Gov and TEPCO have been colluding for years to cover up the real situation. And the USA who pushed them into nuclear 50 years ago, now see China as a real threat to "our buddies" in Japan if Japan cannot compete in manufacturing because they can't use the "cheap electricity" that their 50 nuke plant can provide. I'm seeing articles..snickering at mutant sea life.
    Ooohh..is a giant goldfish coming..?
Someone above mentioned..a whole pier arriving..but the radiation is yet to arrive.
    A great statement..

Like I said..the sea is slow to give up it's secrets.
It is truly a world of survival of the fittest.
    Those lagging will be consumed.
Those ill-equipped will be hunted first and perish.
Many will die..from the complications of the mutation.
Many will not be borne..at all.
    Those California beaches looking tidier?
Be cool to get an honest sea bird count.

Why do people laugh at mutation?
And when it is human children?
    Their children…?

    Don't they find it 'alarming'?

I myself am not afraid of the word 'fear monger'..there are some instances ..in which..those in their right minds..should be afraid.

    It's all good..
It's only 'polka dot cows'…indicative of serious radiation exposure..(SARC)

more infor on destruction of ocean
(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber announced today that Oregon is joining with the state of California to establish a new scientific team to focus on the extent, causes, and effects of ocean acidification and hypoxia (lowered dissolved oxygen in sea waters) along the Pacific coastline. The West Coast Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia Science Team will bring together scientists from Oregon, California, Washington, and British Columbia to develop strategic recommendations for researching and monitoring ocean acidification and hypoxia in the Pacific Ocean.

Ocean acidification is causing problems for shellfish that are struggling to develop shells by the time they become adults. Oyster larvae are especially having a hard time. Oyster cultivation in Tillamook County is having to raise oyster larvae in hatcheries that have normal acidification levels to give the shellfish a chance to properly develop.

In einer japanischen Veröffentlichung, aus dem Jahre 2002, werden für verschiedene Arten von Fischen allgemeine Cäsium-137 Konzentrationsfaktoren angegeben.

1 Cs 137 in one liter of ocean water —>
    Zooplankton x 18
    Crustaceae x 25
Fish eating the zooplankton x 30
Fish that eat other smaller fish x 55
Predators, at the end of the food chain, x Factor 85

    • You don't need to shout but its true. The biggest threat is the possibility of one of the spent fuel pools catching fire. Possibility of radiation getting too high and site abandonned and no maintenance available for spent fuel pool cooling. Or another earthquake destroying fuel pool especially problamatic unit 4. The water situation is bad for sure but only one aspect of a multitude of threats from Fuku to us. The common spent fuel pool has thousands of fuel rod bundles. The problem with the simulation is that assumes there is a single release then stops. The release of the radioactive particles has continued on for the last 2 1/2 years, and possibly increased over that time. We're now getting reports of 400 tonnes of radioactive water pouring into the pacific daily. That "red" plum in the images should continue on being emitted from Japan through the 2014 and longer.

  • Well finally some realistic mainstream Fuku news. But always misleading. Talking of the small levels of radiation that will be in the seawater by the west coast of north america, that may be true and probably I and my children can still swim in the ocean but no mention of bio accumulation. Jebus and Tacomagroove mentioned it and so will I. Just look at the red area in the middle of the plume diagram and realize that all the Pacific wild salmon, tuna and the smaller fish they eat are swimming around that red area before returning to our coast to be caught and eaten. Bio accumulation.
This is a trick of media to focus on the possible low levels of radiation that will evolve on Americas west coast while ignoring that fish consumed will be swimming in much higher concentrations.

See cbc take on it contained in article mini headline radioactive water may have been leaking for weeks. We all know it has been years.
