Editorial: Diet should pass Fukushima child victims’ law and hold gov’t responsible
Mainichi
June 4, 2012

Lawmakers in both the ruling and opposition parties are in the final stages of composing a draft bill supporting victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, with an emphasis on providing support for children and pregnant women, who are said to be especially sensitive to radiation.

One of the pillars of the proposed legislation is the reduction or exemption of medical expenses for children and expecting mothers living in areas where radiation levels exceed a certain standard.

Many lives, especially those of Fukushima prefectural residents, have been turned upside down due to the nuclear disaster. A large number of people not under government orders to evacuate have done so anyway on their own volition, with many families being torn apart. The anguish of parents with young children, in particular, is immeasurable.

A lifetime guarantee of health exams for children who have lived in designated areas, as well as the provision of opportunities for children actually living in designated areas to spend time in nature far from Fukushima are also expected to be incorporated into the bill.

The Chernobyl Law established in the former Soviet Union in 1991, five years after the nuclear disaster outbreak at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, stipulated that residents in areas with annual radiation exposure of 1 millisievert or higher had “the right to relocation,” and even today, are guaranteed medical care. Furthermore, residents living in such highly contaminated locations are offered long-term rehabilitation in facilities located in non-contaminated areas. Japanese lawmakers seem to have taken the Chernobyl Law into consideration in drafting their own bill.

      hi peace

i think this will save alot of future suffering for the children and the adults.. this is a brave step forward for common sense..

now maybe they will take monitoring seriously and i hope the IAEA isnt involved with the awful ICRP "theory"!!

they need to import more food until the complicated tests on bio accumulation are done and the levels of contamination are properly plotted.. time to build an army of volunteer monitor staff hopefully trained by people like CRIIRAD and ACRO france and the independent japanese scientists who put humanity before profit!!

      nice post admin!!

obama should still get the human rights charter for the protection of all children ratified though with the help of congress of course!!

the children of belarus, khazakstan and aborignal peoples etc are waiting!!

Good geographic breakdown of all the bases…a bookmark saver.

    :)

but there might be 90 bases

nice real estate though… cleaner soil too maybe?? (err thats a point! :( )

Unfortunately, health exams and medical care are no match for radiation and cancers. We can't even successfully decontaminate the farmer's soil. Or stop damaged reactors from spewing. Man is no match for the disastrous effects caused by nuclear power. The only solution is to stop creating radiation.

yes this is good news. vouchers to evacuate, the best option for now. and once the evac is complete,,a huge huge effort on the reactors in addition to complete up to the second rad data streamed in a common sense everyone can make their own informed decisions sort of way.
