[...] now, I’m going to measure alpha, beta, and gamma rays, with the shield plate off.It shows about 22.53 micro Sievert. Then, I’m going to put a piece of paper in order to block alpha rays.
Now, I put a piece of paper, which means alpha rays are blocked.
It shows about 9 micro Sievert.
Children use this street to go to school.

The Math
- Without Paper: 22.53 microSv/h of combined alpha, beta, and gamma radiation
- With Paper: 9.008 microSv/h of beta and gamma radiation (alpha blocked by paper)
- The remaining 13.522 microSv/h is the alpha radiation
More on Alpha Emitters
“When alpha particle emitting isotopes are ingested, they are far more dangerous than their half-life or decay rate would suggest, due to the high relative biological effectiveness of alpha radiation to cause biological damage, after alpha-emitting radioisotopes enter living cells. Ingested alpha emitter radioisotopes (such as transuranics or actinides) are an average of about 20 times more dangerous, and in some experiments up to 1000 times more dangerous, than an equivalent activity of beta emitting or gamma emitting radioisotopes. [...]
Because of this high mass and strong absorption, if alpha-emitting radionuclides do enter the body, alpha radiation is the most destructive form of ionizing radiation. It is the most strongly ionizing, and with large enough doses can cause any or all of the symptoms of radiation poisoning. It is estimated that chromosome damage from alpha particles is anywhere from 10 to 1000 times greater than that caused by an equivalent amount of gamma or beta radiation, with the average being set at 20 times.” -Wikipedia (Emphasis Added)
EPA: Which Radionuclides are Alpha Emitters?
There are many alpha emitting radioactive elements, both natural and manmade. You can find fact sheets for several key alpha emitters at the Radionuclides page:
- americium-241
- plutonium-236
- uranium-238 [...]

Alpha emitting sources are very dangerous when getting into the organs. Most have heigh energy. Would be interesting which nuclides are found there.

hmmm….there was at least a few tonnes of "spent" fuel in sfp3 before it got blown sky high……

There could be a good side to this movie. I agree with all of the comments that this is nothing more than a silly movie that risks trivializing the actual (and more horrifying ) truth of the Chernobyl accident. I also agree that many young people have no clue about what happened there, and what is happening today around the world. If all they learn is the name Chernobyl and a silly story, that would be a tragic waste. If, on the other hand, the anti-nuclear community uses this movie as a way to start a dialogue about nuclear dangers with a new audience, then that would be a great opportunity.

Might want to move this comment to the other thread on the Chernobyl movie.
