Resident 1: Speaking of monitoring, does nobody else have problem with them not being there after 6 o’clock? Do y’all realize that? Does nobody have a problem with no one being at that sinkhole after 6 o’clock for 12 hours. At the sinkhole, they close and lock the gates at 6 o’clock. There’s no one there, that’s what I’m telling you. Listen to what she’s saying there’s no one there, once they leave and lock the gates. If that thing would start doing anything you know…
Resident 2: There’s an operator that works there through the night and there’s a guy sitting by the flare [...] But there is no one actually working at the hole because it’s too dangerous. But the operator goes and checks the reflectors on the trees.

Louisiana State Representative Joe Harrison: The question on them working Sunday, I’m going to get that answered too.

Early on in this mess two men who were doing "maintenance" in a small boat had to be rescued. Did anyone ever find out just what maintenance a sinkhole requires?

Ya, it's a rotational check, to make sure the spin is going the right way…

Maybe their hoping that if they leave it unguarded, either someone will steal it, or it'll wander away, either way problem solved.
It makes as much sense as everything else they've tried.
