Two contractors involved in the cleanup of a large sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish had to be rescued Thursday morning from their boat after a portion of the slurry-filled hole’s edge collapsed, parish officials said.
The boat that the workers had been riding in was tied to a tree in the 50-foot section of the edge that fell into the sinkhole, parish emergency officials said in a news release.
The section of land was on the southwest side of the sinkhole

The workers’ boat sunk into the sinkhole shortly after they were rescued, parish officials said.

During a news conference last week in Gonzales, Texas Brine officials said they expected that the hole would continue to expand as the edges gradually “slough off,” or fall in over time, eventually making the hole shallower.

“This natural growth of the sinkhole was expected and could continue,” [according to the State's statement Wednesday evening].

Assumption Parish Police Jury spokeswoman Kim Torres says the sinkhole near Bayou Corne grew by 50 feet Thursday morning as the surrounding environment sloughs into it. Two cleanup workers in a boat near the site almost fell in and had to be rescued by airboat.
Their boat, which was tied to a tree, was eventually swallowed by the muck.
There were no injuries reported and cleanup operations have been suspended.

Just what sort of work would two men be doing??

Very interesting question, Flapdoodle – "cleanup workers" with a boat tied to a tree – the mind boggles.
Also, "the sinkhole near Bayou Corne grew by 50 feet" – diameter, circumference, the long side, each side?… could be almost anything, even depth! Just that "natural growth" in action, I guess.

"Cleanup operations suspended" begs several questions but the most obvious is "why?"
Which part of the "natural growth" (that they tell us they expected all along) justified "cleanup operations" by two men in a tethered boat but no longer does? What has changed (in their worldview)?

Boat guys, I guess.

As an English teacher, I loved the descriptive words used by the state regarding the swallowing of a boat by the "naturally growing" sinkhole as the edge "sloughs off" while adding to the "slurry filled" hole. There used to be a commercial for "Tidy Bowl" with a little man dressed in sailing outfit while in a tiny boat sailing the seas of a toilet bowl, keeping that very important fixture sparkling clean. Unfortunately, that is the picture that came to me. Two men in a boat with the product Tidy Bowl and perhaps working with toilet brushes. It did report that they were involved with the cleaning of the slurry.

The only cleanup I can imagine might be plastic bags of radioactive waste that floated to the surface.

no worries, it's all dissolved and diluted…

Clean up a sinkhole that is "naturally" expanding?
It sounds like fruitless and dangerous work to me.

@ HotR,
they just wait and do nothing.
(Media) things will magically clean up soon when the next spectacular thing paralyzes the masses.

How can they keep saying they were expecting this and that, when days or even hours before in prior reports they say they have no clue?
Is Tepco running this sinkhole or what?
