Title: The Buddha of Fukushima’s Forbidden Zone: A Photo Essay

This is the story of Naoto Matsumura, Tomioka City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan–the last man standing in Fukushima’s Forbidden Zone. [...]
JAXA [equivalent of US's NASA] has analyzed some sample of land and food taken from the zone. “Around Tomioka, the levels of radioactivity in the soil are superior to Chernobyl,” he was told. Matsumura likes the mushrooms in the forest. However he knows that those he took in the forest are highly contaminated. Despite his weariness, Matsumura is conscious of the risks he is taking. However, his sense of humor has not left him; it may outlast the radioactivity.
“There are good sides to this tragedy. The telephone is free, and I do not need to pay my electricity bills. Life has become cheaper.”
At some point, Matsumura has accepted to take a whole body counter check of the situation inside his body (internal exposure). The doctors exclaimed: “You are a champion of radiation!” Matsumura does not wish to comment any further on this subject. When he speaks about his family, he speaks very freely: ”My father is 80 years old, my grandmother lived until she was hundred years old, so I had the hope to live at least until I get to my eighties. With the radioactivity, I think I will live until my sixties, at best”. [...]

A Hippocratic Oath for life scientists
A Hippocratic-style oath in the life sciences could help to educate researchers about the dangers of dual-use research
“The issue of codes of conduct is becoming increasingly important in the twenty-first century because…scientists need to be more aware of concerns over the misuse of science and technology”
“…short codes of ethics, pledged orally…have a long history in the medical profession and are generally adhered to, although they are devoid of any real power”
“With 19 respondents, the limited scale of this study means it cannot be broadly extrapolated, but the results are interesting. With respect to the greatest influence on ethical decision-making, seven participants cited GMC guidelines; five cited ‘consultation with senior’; four selected ‘peer discussion’ and two selected ‘other’.
Notably, only one participant cited the Declaration of Geneva as being the most important source for ethical decision-making.
Given these answers, one could assume that the Declaration of Geneva has failed to influence the behaviour of most PRHOs in the Yorkshire region. However, in response to the question “Do you consider the Declaration of Geneva a significant tool in making ethical decisions?”, 11 participants asserted that it was significant and, when asked why, several participants referred to the Declaration as a “good summary” of the principles governing medical ethics.
The other respondents who contended that the Declaration was not significant explained that there were better alternatives available. One participant argued that the Declaration of Geneva was “Not easy to apply to all clinical situations” and that there was “better guidance available from GMC/Medical Protection Society/Seniors” (Revill, 2005).”

Looking at the Declaration of Geneva, all I can say is that there are a great many Doctors employed by the U.S. military, CIA, FBI, etc. that actively participated in the torture of detainees at Guantanamo (sp) Bay Cuba that should be bared from practicing medicine. They consulted with the torturers on the best way to do ‘things’. Fuckers….

Now we know why we do not see many people in this view and we have been seeing all these govt vehicles with people in white suits going through Tomioka. There has been an ONGOING National Emergency for some time now. It is getting worse and the radioactive contamination is also as it is more and more escaping into the jet stream.

“Matsumura has been looking after 400 cows, 60 pigs, 30 fowls, 10 dogs, more than hundred cats and an ostrich. The ostrich was the official mascot of TEPCO; they brought it to the town, allegedly. The ostrich was supposed to represent energy efficiency. The ostrich needs very little food to survive and thrive; it’s a very energetic animal. Unfortunately, it also has a tendency to bury its head in the sand when dealing with danger and is not a very bright bird. It makes a fitting symbol for TEPCO and its executives. (There is, however, no past history of ostriches being arrested for criminal negligence resulting in death and/or injury. They’re stupid creatures but not evil.)”

Well, I’m not sure if the lit eyes came from a camera flash, but Mr. Matsumura is one brave dude!
I can’t help but admire his tenacity in choosing his path, and it is his path, regardless or what anyone feels or thinks.
He exemplifies the zen story of the man who clung to a vine being gnawed at by two mice when he spotted a ripe strawberry and reached out to pluck it.
How sweet it is!
